Father sold produce from wagon pulled by a blind horse.

He & his siblings worked to support the family, but Arthur was still able to finish high school @ 16.

Arthur attended @NorthwesternLaw, graduating at head of his class in 1929 & earning a doctorate, summa cum laude, in 1930.

@NorthwesternLaw 1931: Arthur married Dorothy Kurgans. They had 2 children: a daughter & son.
He also began a successful career as a civilian lawyer.

1977: Carter made Arthur Ambassador to Belgrade Conference on Human Rights.

1978: President Carter presented Arthur with Presidential Medal of Freedom—one of the highest civilian awards in the United States.

Arthur died of a heart attack on January 19, 1990.
