OVERLAP #animtip
A couple people asked me to break down the movement of Jherico's run cycle. Here goes…
For clarity, I stripped this 4-bound cycle down to one 16 frame loop and played at half speed.
The bright white circles are fixed to 4 key joints on the body. The bars at the bottom show only the up-down translates of these joints.
Each of these elements are offset in time. Notice when each tick gets to its peak. How many frames of offset are there between each element? Which element appears to be leading the action?
The hips reach their peak (or valley) first followed by the chest and the head. It’s common for the hips to lead the action, but there are plenty of exceptions to the rule!
The key concept here is OVERLAPPING ACTION. You may hear animators say, “Add some overlap.” or “Offset your keys.” Translation: Different parts of the body need to move at different times.
Here’s the longer version of the cycle with side-to-side motion and ambient twitches.
