One way I advise students on pushing poses in 3D is to "break cardinal planes"

Front = Coronal
Side = Saggital
Top = Transverse

In the example below, the eyes/head hips are parallel to the transverse plane, creating a "square" or "blocky" look 1/3

#animtip
By adding natural twisting and bending through the spine and up through the head, the parallel lines are broken 2/3
Depending on camera view and context, breaking cardinal planes, combined with identifying strong lines of action, can create more dynamic poses in your work 3/3

πŸ‘πŸ‘„πŸ‘ Eye Dart Animation Tip!

⏩ Eye darts are a great way to add life to an otherwise still moment.

They convey that the character is alive and thinking. When animating eye darts, keep in mind these simple pointers... (1/5)πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡
#b3d #animtip #blender3d #animation #anim
Quick and Snappy!

πŸ‘‰ The dart should happen over 1 frame, or you can add a 1 frame ease close to the new position (it should be barely noticeable). If the eye is traveling a large distance, you can add a smear frame like in this animation of Dolores from Encanto. (2/5)πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡
πŸ“ Natural: Irregular in timing/spacing/shape
The goal is to make the motion believable.
Make sure the timing between the darts is not the same and the eye doesn’t travel the same distance every time. Have an irregular triangle or rhomboid shaped path! (3/5)πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

Exercise I used to give to students:

Translate a 2D animation to 3D
1. Pick a sprite animation from a favorite game
2. Extract key poses
3. Animate and apply your current knowledge
4. Keep it short

There's a little bit of a pause midway through the flip that I omitted. Fun challenge trying to hit all the poses while remaining somewhat fluid. Total time ~3 hours minus video editing πŸ˜…Let's go 2022

The #animtip thread about head turns that you were looking for today πŸ˜…
Step one. Sure it functions, but we can do better!
The simple blink. People and creatures alike tend to blink when turning to protect their eyes. It also adds more life. But still missing some things!

Finally had a chance to do a thread about one of the more challenging shots I've ever animated for #vivomovie, but not for the reasons you'd expect. #animation #animtip
The shot is in the 'Own Drum' Sequence of Vivo. The conversation from the beginning - how do we make the dead pets look 2D? Different render and shader solutions were thrown out, but I raised my hand and asked - what if I just animate them in 2D?
#Sony sups decided to give it a go. We had to borrow some equipment and a #TVpaint license from SPA since my setup was only for 3D anim. My job- tackle the 2D characters as well as Gabi and the camera move. Dead pets pop up from their graves and follow Gabi as she plays the flute ImageImageImage

OVERLAP #animtip
A couple people asked me to break down the movement of Jherico's run cycle. Here goes…
For clarity, I stripped this 4-bound cycle down to one 16 frame loop and played at half speed.
The bright white circles are fixed to 4 key joints on the body. The bars at the bottom show only the up-down translates of these joints.

It's #skeletember! πŸ’€
Skeletons sustain us and are the foundation of our bodies, yet so many people find them scary (?) and the same goes for rigging!
So let's share some rigging love this September by posting a skeleton study, a rig, or a rigging tip you found interesting πŸ’œ
#Skeletember Day 1.
Even muscles can become bones if you believe hard enough in them.
Or you just create an IK constraint to mimic those sexy biceps.
Mine will always look bony anyway u.u

#Skeletember Day 2.
I love when the iris follows the pupil just a little bit slower and you control each eye with just one bone.
You can achieve this with transform constraints or simply by turning the iris into a mesh and binding it to both pupil and eye bones.
