Podcasts are just so damn good at teaching about the world. Let’s take a visual tour of some interesting things from #podcast land in 2018. These are taken from the below article: link.medium.com/ZCXLi2TgMS
First, @romanmars and @99piorg tell us that there was a time when airships were the assumed future of air travel in Airships and the Future That Never Was. radiopublic.com/99pi/ep/s1!6de… #podcast #drawing Image
Next, we have @johngreen and @anthroreviewed laying down some super interesting background on Dr Pepper like that it’s the oldest continuously sold soda in the US. “Diet Dr Pepper, the soda that tastes more like the anthropocene than any other.” wnycstudios.org/story/episode-… Image
Next up, @Radiolab with Smarty Plants is classic Radiolab and you’ll learn that there is a fungi called “mycorrhiza” that trades phosphorus and nitrogen with plants in exchange for sugars in an “internet of trees” radiopublic.com/Radiolab/ep/s1… Image
And we know we are tribal creatures, but did you know that researchers have shown people will act tribally even when the only difference is that their group is wearing a hat? @davidmcraney and @notsmartblog gets into it further in “Tribal Psychology”. radiopublic.com/you-are-not-so… Image
I finally read Dune this year, and it’s all because of @ImaginWorldsPod. One cool thing I learned from the “Book of Dune” episode is that the storyline and themes of Dune draw heavily from religious myths, particularly Islam. radiopublic.com/imaginary-worl… #podcast Image
Next up is @Ologies from @alieward. Her two part Cosmology ep with @AstroKatie is so great. Learned things like if the solar system (dwarf planets and all) were to fit in the palm of your hand, the Milky Way would be about the size of the US. radiopublic.com/ologies-WwDEba… #podcast Image
Ran out of time yesterday, so adding some more of my favorite facts learned from #podcasts in 2018. Check full thread for lots of pictures and interesting tidbits from the past year, and the top has link to all of them:
So starting off is #cosmicvertigo from @astroduff and @astropixie because the best facts are space facts. If you want real, actual empty space, you need to find yourself in THE VOID. Two bonus facts in the article above. radiopublic.com/cosmic-vertigo… #podcast Image
In the 19th century, an island bubbled up from under the sea, and true to our cooperative nature, nearby nations decided to share it. Just kidding, they all immediately planted their flag and claimed complete ownership. Thanks @constantpodcast! radiopublic.com/the-constant-a… #podcast Image
Next up is learning about the new science of evolution with @DavidQuammen on The Polymath Project with @MMeditations. The tree of life is more like a tangled tree instead of a perfectly branching one, thanks to something called horizontal gene transfer. stitcher.com/podcast/polyma… ImageImage
Next up, learn all about the insane “Airplane Game” that was the viral pyramid scheme of the early 80’s. This was a great starting episode of The Dream from @lileverywhere and @SeeJaneMarie where we get the reporting on MLM’s we’ve always wanted. radiopublic.com/the-dream-WJ94… #podcast Image
And a few more to finish off list of things I learned from #podcasts in 2018. (Link 🔝)@trufelman with delightful Articles of Interest. Blue jeans as we know them are a far cry from unprocessed denim and half the world is wearing jeans at any given time. radiopublic.com/99pi/ep/s1!e03… Image
Next up is from @planetmoney, the podcast that fill me head with more random useful bits of knowledge than any other. In The Laws of The Office, we learn about these all too accurate rules of working for the man. radiopublic.com/PlanetMoney/ep… Image
At last but furthest from least is a bit of info I learned on @lahpodcast in the very first episode, The Tower of Babel. The Old Testament is not as old as I imagined, at least compared to other ancient stories. radiopublic.com/literature-and… #podcast Image

For #InternationalPodcastDay I wanted to shout out all my favorite podcasts that would live on my podcast shelf if they were books. All of these shows regularly teach me new things and challenge my thinking. 1/ Image
Middle shelf: @20korg for always teaching me something about awesome sounds I didn’t know I needed to know. 2/
@99piorg and @romanmars for just straight up having one of the best educational/interesting ratio of any podcast. 3/
