HOW TO FIGHT INSTAGRAM LED DEPRESSION...

I spent chunks of 2018 visiting loved ones in hospital.

Walking through those wards, I discovered an idea called the "CONTRAST DIAL".

This explains the negative effects social media has, but also how to REVERSE it.

THREAD...
1. We are not built to perceive objective reality.

We just contrast our perceptions with prior experiences that we have had.

We are not human beings.

We are contrast monkeys.
2. Charlie Munger's favorite contrast experiment involves three buckets of water.

Bucket A = Ice cold.
Bucket B = Near boiling.

Bucket C = Lukewarm.

For 2 mins, participants put one hand in Bucket A and their other hand in Bucket B.

They then put both hands in bucket C.
Despite both hands now being in the same temperature water, one hand feels the lukewarm water as boiling and the other feels it as freezing.

How can your hands perceive the same water as having completely different temperatures?

CONTRAST.
3. The contrast dial is one of the oldest sales techniques.

Real estate hustlers take viewers to crap & overpriced houses first.

Before finally taking them to an average and slightly overpriced house.

The viewers contrast the average house with all the crap ones and buy it
4. Marketers - be careful what you compare your product to.

@rorysutherland believes that video conferencing never took off partially due to ineffective contrasting.

They marketed it as a "cheap alternative to physical travel" instead of "the rich man's phone call".
5. In 1993, CEO's were paid on average 131x more than the average worker.

Regulators decided to make CEO's wages public to reduce the gap.

The opposite happened.

CEO pay is now 369x the average worker.

Why?

CEO's began CONTRASTING their pay with colleagues.

@danariely
6. @danielgross discussed with @eriktorenberg that people may make decisions such as quitting their job based on contrast.

Overhear how much a friend makes at a party and become unhappy. Or, return from a holiday and contrast work's mundane moments with the vacations highlights.
7. The tragedy of modern life is that we can simultaneously:

A. Live in the greatest time ever to be alive

B. Not have the memories of our ancestors to appreciate how fucking good we have it.

I call this Zelzheimer's

(Zeitgeist + Alzheimers)
8. We live in a society where Instagram users contrast their 9/10 life with the 10/10 life they have seen in their newsfeed.

They then get upset at the -1, rather than be grateful for the +9.
9. To fix Instagram depression (and Zelzheimer's) - we need more negative contrast in our lives.

The contrast dial is the only way to fix the hedonic treadmill.
10. The inverse contrast of an Instagram newsfeed is walking through hospital wards.

Instead of scrolling through artificial lives designed to make you feel envious, you stroll past real people in pain who would give everything to trade places with you.
11. One of the best happiness hacks I have discovered is to simply recover from being ill.

Getting out of bed is a luxury good for the next few days.

"Nothing like a health problem to turn up the contrast dial on the rest of life" - @naval
12. I suspect as society gets richer - comfortable experiences will become less popular and people will start paying for uncomfortable experiences.

"The richer a society, the more it needs fasting holidays and the less it needs feasting ones." - @mmay3r
13. The contrast dial is LINDY.

The Stoic philosophers had a powerful technique they called Negative Visualization.
14. With contrasting, the map is not the terrain (@farnamstreet)

The more real the experience, the better.

Fasting > Gratitude journal
War documentaries > Gratitude journal
Becoming friends with people who work real jobs > Gratitude journal
15. One of my fave people to hang out with works a REAL job.

I once asked him - "How's work?"

He responded:

"I'm not bothered about getting stabbed or shot. It's getting acid thrown in my face that keeps me up at night"

All my work problems faded away by contrast...
16. If you're looking for somebody to contrast your problems against.

Consider Alistair Urquhart (@jockowillink)

- Prisoner of war during WW2 at 22 years old.

- Sent to work on the "Death Railway" by the Japanese. (10,000 prisoners died of cholera, malnutrition, and torture)
- He was then transported on the "Hell Ship". (Every prisoner aboard fought for themselves with most resorting to cannibalism)

- The ship was sunk by a US torpedo. Alistair floated on a single man raft for FIVE days WITHOUT FOOD OR WATER before being found by Japanese soilders.
- He was then sent to work on the coal mines 10 miles from Nagasaki and was there when the ATOMIC BOMB went off.

^^^

I recently caught myself getting stressed because I was late for a massage.

The thought of Alistair came to my mind, and I felt deeply ashamed by contrast.
SUMMARY:

1. We are not human beings. We are contrast monkeys.
2. Nothing is good or bad, but contrast makes it so.
3. The contrast dial is the cheat mode for the hedonic treadmill.
4. Rich people will start paying for more uncomfortable experiences as society gets richer.

Flying is accidentally the best ever environment for DEEP work and reflection.

Writers like @rickygervais do their best work on airplanes.

Here's 6 reasons why.

THREAD...
What looks like a bug - can often be a feature.

“A change of perspective is worth 80 IQ points.”

The restrictions we face on airplanes is what makes the experience so liberating.
AIRPLANE FEATURE 1 - HIGH EXIT COSTS

You can't find any escapes.

If you try to escape, you face death.

Negative incentives are built into the system.

Just re-read 'The Almanack of @naval'

Despite scraping his Twitter library for the @NavalBot, @EricJorgenson included a tonne of gems I'd never heard before.

Here's my favourite 17 highlights below...

THREAD...
"Making money is not a thing you do –– it's a skill you learn." - Naval

"You should not grind at a lot of hard work until you figure out what you should be working on." - Naval
"If you're looking toward the long-term goal of getting wealthy, you should ask yourself:

1. Is this authentic to me?

2. Is it myself that I am projecting?

3. Am I productising it?

4. Am I scaling it with capital, code, media or leverage? - Naval

Claude Shannon is the founder of Information Theory

His essay on creative thinking is criminally underrated

I've unpacked 2 of Shannon's ideas below

THREAD...
Shannon was the original theorist behind digitally storing and communicating information.

Without his work, I wouldn't be able to write this tweet you are reading.

Facebook, Google, Amazon, Apple, etc are all standing on Shannons giant shoulders.

Genius is an understatement.
SHANNON IDEA 1 - APPLIED OCCAMS RAZOR

"Eliminate everything from the problem except the essentials; that is, cut it down to size." - Shannon

"Almost every problem that you come across is befuddled with extraneous data." - Shannon

"How to Operate" is one of my favorite lectures

Keith Rabois (@rabois) breaks down OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE

The principles are taken from the experience helping build Square, LinkedIn and PayPal

They are timeless

Here are 6 mental models from the talk

THREAD...
RABOIS MODEL 1 - BUILD A HIGH-PERFORMANCE MACHINE

"We used to joke that if Martians took over eBay, it would take 6 months for the world to notice." - Rabois

"Build a company that idiots could run - because eventually, they will." - Buffett
Rabois states that building a high functioning team or company is like building an engine.

It has 3 steps:

Step 1 - Build a beautiful conceptual whiteboard drawing of your engine at peak performance.

Josh Waitzkin might be the most INTERESTING person alive.

He doesn't have Twitter. And he barely uses the internet.

I've compiled my favorite 5 MENTAL MODELS of his below.

THREAD...
WAITZKIN MODEL 1 - DEPTH OVER WIDTH

His life so far:

1. Chess prodigy + National champ

2. 2x world champion in Tai Chi push hands

3. The 1st black belt in Jiu-Jitsu under Marcelo Garcia (GOAT)

4. He's now in an unknown ocean town mastering surfing + advising elite investors
The Waitzkin paradox:

He's achieved more WIDTH across disciplines in 43 years than most could in 100 lives

How?

His obsession with DEPTH over WIDTH.

His life is the testimony to deep work and singular focus.

He spends 5-10 years of his life dedicated to each craft

Thought experiment via Warren Buffett:

You have to invest in people you know.

You get 10% of their future earnings + happiness.

Who would you pick and why?

👇
1. @jkalms - Disgusting work ethic + drive. Goes the extra mile for people

2. @harrydry (@GoodMarketingHQ) - Unreal focus and nuanced thinker.

3. @alexayin - Best network builder + empathetic salesperson I know.
4. @connor_holly1 - Ultralearner that gets his hands dirty with the tactical. Learns in public.

5. @CathalUK - Puts the dots together on changing internet culture. Hyper rational and still hyper-creative.

6. Dr. Yusef (@PropaneFitness) - 10/10 humility + character. 100% trust
