2) Instruction does not replace practice. Learning implicitly through exposure is far more effective than explicit direction. Don’t tell a player how to do something, create exposure and opportunity to execute the how.
3) Disguise difficult/boring concepts. In Duolingo, difficult grammatical concepts are hidden/sprinkled through content blocks (eg: past tense isn’t labeled past tense, but taught in the ‘recreation’ section)
4) Give exposure in different contexts. Let players learn how to use X skill in Y areas/situations to increase the likelihood that they build a robust mental model.
5) Make things memorable. Duolingo has an entire twitter account dedicated to weird sentences that come in the app. Unexpected sentences make things more salient. Emotion/surprise are very effective—so are mistakes. “Learn from your mistakes” - just don’t make mistakes negative.
