Thread: #PledgeIdai team spent the weekend on the ground in Chimanimani & we will sharing some of our experiences in the following days. The team visited 2 of the most affected areas Ngagu & Kopa. We were met by the @HigherLifeFDN team of volunteers who have on the ground
...since #CycloneIdai devastated Chimanimani & Chipinge. Before heading out we were given an update by @LovemoreNyatsin from the @econetzimbabwe group who has been heading operations.
After the debrief with @LovemoreNyatsin we headed to Ngangu one of the areas affected the most by #CycloneIdai. This was a residential area where several families lived, most are either dead or missing & their homes have been reduced to rubble.
After Ngagu we travelled to an area called Kopa. #CycloneIdai made landfall in Ngangu between 7 & 8pm, then made landfall in Kopa at approximately 11pm. Kopa was the hardest hit area. An area that housed 70-80 households has been reduced to rubble.
Most of the bodies/people have not been recovered or found. Witnesses estimate that up to approximately 600 people could have perished in this area alone.
During the trip to #Chimanimani the team spoke to people who were affected by #CycloneIdai first hand. Tomorrow we will be posting first hand accounts from some of the survivors of #CycloneIdai
We spent the week in #Zimbabwe finding out how your food donations get to those who need them. Food parcels are dropped off by helicopters. #CycloneIdai#TheNextMile 1/6
3/6 Helicopters can't land in some areas dues to rocks & debris, so residents make bridges from fallen trees & wire to get to food distribution points. 📸 @tatendamapigoti#CycloneIdai#TheNextMile
