Ok so in honour of the 20th anniversary of #StarWars #ThePhantomMenace I've decided to try and spot every named battle droid in the film, as they can be identified using the Trade Federation Basic script on their backpacks. Here's the translation in case anyone wants to join in!
The first two droids with visible names that we see in the film are these two in the hangar - 2296 and 2391 by my reckoning. They're two of the only security droids we see without weapons during the whole film.
Next up we get a nice view of several numbers on the droids sent to check that Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are dead. The command droid is fairly clearly 2714, but the others are one of the only cases of duplication within the same frame. Both on the right seem to read 2112.
To the left of the command droid, only one droid's ID is visible, and only partially, seeming to read 229, with the fourth digit obscured. In the next shot of the droid the number seems to have changed to 2112, same as the two on the right. Also the only time a number changes.
During the ensuing lightsaber fight what seems to be 2296 (possibly the partial 229 from earlier) can be seen, as well as what might be a number starting with 27. A third looks like it's another 2714 like the commander.
We're ID free for a while until the capture of Amidala, after which we get another commander: 3287 (the last digit is very blurry so this mostly a guess).
One of the droids following 3287 is clearly visible as 2767, another seems almost visible, and might have an 8 in, but so far I've been unable to pause on a clear enough frame.
Next up we get two droids leading prisoners: 2373 and 1672
Then another 2767 watching out over the plaza.
Most of the droids escorting the queen and co are too out of focus during action to make out their IDs, but we do get 2943.
In the hangar the commander (who delivers one of my least favourite exchanges in the film) is 2163 while the two flanking him are 7169 and 1933.
During the fighting we see the return, and death, of 2767 from the steps and also 2714, who gets jump kicked by Obi-Wan
After this the film takes a break from droids during the trips to Tatooine and Coruscant, and so must I, but I'll return tomorrow with the second half of the film
Time for the second half of my droid list for the #starwars #thephantommeance 20th anniversary. Some of these I had to view on a larger screen to decipher, but I'll post the clearest image I can. The second act of the film has one scene with droids, and only one is visible: 3284
We don't get anymore droids until the heroes return to Naboo, after which we start with a plaza seemingly full of our old friend 2767.
Moving to the battle on the Grass Plain, the only droids who's actually named elsewhere: the commander OOM-9, is actually also a 2767.
Alot of the backpacks of the huge droid march toward the Gungans almost look readable, but the only one I've actually managed to read is this unfortunate droid who loses its head. The first two digits are pretty clearly 13, after which there might be a 2, but that's all I can get
Next we see a lot of a corridor with a camera angled regularly behind the droids. The first batch we see are, from left to right, 2767, 7642, 1121, 7642, 2369
Another 2767 then falls casualty to Padme and her men
Next we're back to the grass plain, where a surprising number of droids seem to be fighting hand to hand. 9317 is visible getting punched for several shots in a row, while 3271 crawls around on the floor having been hit by a booma. Finally 7511 gets blasted pretty much in half
While Jar Jar panics due to half an unfortunately unnamed droid, 2714 is grappling with another Gungan off to the right. The second droid Jar Jar indirectly shoots is the easy to remember 1234. Worth noting that 9317 is still taking a beating in the background for all of this
Back to the Palace and we have on the left possibly 2112 again moving while something starting with 18 crouches. On the right there's a pair of 2761s with another moving 2112
Next is 7629 on the left pillar, then another trio of 2767s, one on the right pillar, one dead and one who spins behind a pillar in the back
During the surrender of Padme and her men, 6369 is clearly visible on the right. The droid on the left seems like it should be readable but never quite stops at the right angle
Next, the only droids that we can see the backs of on the Trade Federation control vessel and the only blue pilot droids who are even close to visible are these two. The blue makes it super hard to make out, but I think one starts 123
After Qui-Gon's Noble End, we get a lot of droids who are taking the Gungans prisoner. To me this looks like, from left to right, a pair of 2313 (far left could be 2311?) then pretty clearly 2991, then two 3271s
Some more 3271s walk past with more in the background. This seems to be the replacement default number for the grass plain rather than 2767
Next up we have two of the clearest in the film, 7824 and 7276. In the background there's also three 2312s
It's hard to make out but I think this is another 2312 and then 2991, although I could only decipher these on a larger screen
Back to the palace and of the trio of droids that walk past, the red is undecipherable, but then we get 2122 and 1333. 1897 and another 2761 are then also visible.
Our final two 2767s are this security droid that runs off to chase Sabe and this corpse on the floor of the throne room.
On closer inspection there is one more partially identifiable droid on the Trade Federation ship, a security droid that seems to start 289
With the destruction of the droid ship we get on final scene of droids, with 2614, 2991 and 2327 all ceasing to function as well as one final 2312
And to nicely finish things off, the final droid is 1138, a number used throughout the Star Wars films as a reference to George Lucas' movie THX 1138. Other notable uses include CC-1138, better known as Clone Commander Bacara, and the cell block Luke makes up in Episode IV
And that's all! Thanks to anyone who actually stuck with this whole thread. What have we learned from this? Mostly nothing, although I certainly now have a lot more @WookOfficial articles to write (atleast about the unique numbered droids with clear numbers)
I hope one day we might learn a little more about the numbering, for example who actually sat and came up with all the numbers? What determined if a droid got a unique number? Were the numbers recorded anywhere and has @HolocronKeeper added any to the holocron?
