Farm Tour 2019 has begun!

First stop: @TheRedAppleFarm, a 100 year old, 4th generation family farm in Phillipston that uses green solar & wind energy to offer 50+ varieties of apples & pick-your-own pumpkins, blueberries, raspberries, peaches, pears & potatoes.
They’ve also got a fantastic country store that’s got New England maple syrup, fresh coffee, cider, local jams and jellies, and cider donuts!
☔️ Last year the very wet weather New England had kept people away on the weekends & ruined three pumpkin fields.

🌪 This year was the first time they’ve ever had hail from an unusually strong storm that swung down from the north (also strange) and damaged several fields.
This is what hail does to blueberries. If #ClimateChange causes more hail, farmers are going to be dealing with this kind of damage more and more often.
Can’t think of a better way to kick off Farm Tour 2019. Thank you @TheRedAppleFarm for the warm welcome & everything you do for our community!

They just canceled votes for the week and sent everyone home because they can't even pass their own bills.

Not only has Jim Jordan NEVER passed a bill into law, he’s never even passed a bill through the House.

To lead the country’s premier legislative body, Republicans have nominated someone who is… demonstrably very bad at legislating.
Jim Jordan wants to ban abortion nationwide with no exceptions for rape or incest.

A 10 year old rape victim in Ohio had to leave the state to get an abortion. Jordan called her a liar then deleted his post after her alleged rapist was caught. businessinsider.com/jim-jordan-del…

I want to clear up some confusion.

As an unelected acting Speaker pro tempore, @PatrickMcHenry's job is to guide the House toward the election of a new Speaker. That's it.

His power is constrained by the plain text of Rule 1, Clause 8 of the Rules of the House.
I'm alarmed by the decision to oust @SpeakerPelosi & @RepStenyHoyer from their offices.

Given the plain text of the rule, I don't think he has that power.
The rule says he can only exercise as much authority as is "necessary and appropriate" towards the end of electing a Speaker.

The Rules Committee narrowly described this rule in 2004: an acting Speaker pro tempore serves "for the sole purpose of electing a new Speaker." Image

It’s no surprise that the same corrupt majority on the Supreme Court that overturned abortion rights, stripped environmental regulations, weakened labor protections & loosened gun laws has now decided that going to college should remain a debt sentence for millions of borrowers.
This story has played out for far too long. A Supreme Court bought and paid for by wealthy special interests that provides for the rich while leaving working families behind.
The highest court in the land ought to deliver more transparency, accountability, and justice for all—not luxury vacations for justices while everyday people get screwed.

FACT CHECK: MAGA right-wing extremists are pushing phony “facts” to demonize people living in poverty. So let’s set the record straight.
 
SNAP helps veterans, seniors, kids, and other vulnerable adults afford food. The average benefit is a measly $6 per person, per day.
Instead of making billionaires pay their fair share of taxes or cutting some of the bloated defense budget, the GOP are focused on the most vulnerable.
 
Here’s a radical idea: try listening to people living in poverty instead of those on Wall Street who control the GOP agenda.
I’ve spent time traveling America to learn how we in Congress can help improve people’s lives by investing in these programs. I’ve learned their lives are complicated and benefits like SNAP and TANF are the only thing keeping them from falling even deeper into poverty.

FACT CHECK: Yesterday, Kevin McCarthy said work requirements for food assistance programs “help move people forward.”

Since Kevin is much more comfortable on Wall Street than talking with working families, allow me to correct the record.
First, there already are work requirements for SNAP and TANF. They have been pretty much the same since the 90s.

And independent studies are clear: they didn’t work then, and they don’t work now. In fact, they just make people hungrier and poorer.
If you’re interested @SpeakerMcCarthy, here are the facts. Research says:

1) Work requirements have no effect on employment.

2) Forcing Americans off SNAP doesn't help them get a job.

3) When Americans lose SNAP, they are more likely to get sick & less likely to find work.
