🧵 This afternoon during debate, Republicans moved to “take down my words,” a procedural term meaning they think I violated the rules and that my words should be stricken from the record. Why? Because I stated facts about Trump’s trials.

Let’s talk about it. Here are my remarks. Read them yourself. Whether you love Trump or hate him, I was simply stating facts about his legal problems. I didn’t say he was guilty or innocent. I didn’t disparage him. I was stating facts.

THREAD: After months of delay, this week, Republicans on the House Agriculture Committee are advancing a Farm Bill reauthorization that is a disaster for American farmers and families.

As a national leader fighting to end hunger, I’m not sitting idly by. Let's talk about it. SNAP is America’s most effective anti-hunger safety net. It lifts people out of poverty.

The GOP farm bill proposes the largest cuts to the program in 30 years. It’s clear: this will make more Americans hungry. We can't cut SNAP! cbpp.org/press/statemen…

🧵Republicans have turned the House of Representatives into a national embarrassment—a dysfunctional disgrace.

They just canceled votes for the week and sent everyone home because they can't even pass their own bills.

They're literally assaulting each other in the hallways. So I spent this morning on the House Floor explaining how the @HouseGOP has been a complete and total disaster for America.

🧵Now that Republicans have nominated Jim Jordan as Speaker, it’s important that people know who he is and what a total and complete disaster he would be as Speaker of the House. So who is Jim Jordan? Not only has Jim Jordan NEVER passed a bill into law, he’s never even passed a bill through the House.

To lead the country’s premier legislative body, Republicans have nominated someone who is… demonstrably very bad at legislating.

I want to clear up some confusion.

As an unelected acting Speaker pro tempore, @PatrickMcHenry's job is to guide the House toward the election of a new Speaker. That's it.

His power is constrained by the plain text of Rule 1, Clause 8 of the Rules of the House. I'm alarmed by the decision to oust @SpeakerPelosi & @RepStenyHoyer from their offices.

Given the plain text of the rule, I don't think he has that power.

It’s no surprise that the same corrupt majority on the Supreme Court that overturned abortion rights, stripped environmental regulations, weakened labor protections & loosened gun laws has now decided that going to college should remain a debt sentence for millions of borrowers. This story has played out for far too long. A Supreme Court bought and paid for by wealthy special interests that provides for the rich while leaving working families behind.

FACT CHECK: MAGA right-wing extremists are pushing phony “facts” to demonize people living in poverty. So let’s set the record straight.

SNAP helps veterans, seniors, kids, and other vulnerable adults afford food. The average benefit is a measly $6 per person, per day. Instead of making billionaires pay their fair share of taxes or cutting some of the bloated defense budget, the GOP are focused on the most vulnerable.

Here’s a radical idea: try listening to people living in poverty instead of those on Wall Street who control the GOP agenda.

FACT CHECK: Yesterday, Kevin McCarthy said work requirements for food assistance programs “help move people forward.”

Since Kevin is much more comfortable on Wall Street than talking with working families, allow me to correct the record. First, there already are work requirements for SNAP and TANF. They have been pretty much the same since the 90s.

And independent studies are clear: they didn’t work then, and they don’t work now. In fact, they just make people hungrier and poorer.

Today, I was so proud to vote yes to uphold marriage equality under federal law. This an amazing and historic victory for equal rights. For decades, LGBTQ+ and civil rights activists have been working towards a more just and equitable country, where people have the right to marry who they love. I’m proud to be from Massachusetts where we have led the way on this issue.

I just returned from Kyiv with @SpeakerPelosi where we met with @ZelenskyyUa to discuss how America can best support Ukraine in their struggle for freedom and democracy.

We discussed the need for continued security, economic, and humanitarian assistance from the United States. Putin's brutal war and deliberate targeting of food supplies has led to an explosion of hunger.

I focused on what America can do to get food and supplies to refugees fleeing violence.

🧵 This week I led an official fact-finding trip to Colombia. Here’s why we went, what we learned, and most importantly, why the people of the United States should care about what’s happening in Colombia. 1/?? ImageImageImage 2/ We’ve spent $8.2 billion in taxpayer money on military and security support for Colombia since 2000. Yet large parts of Colombia still aren’t under government control. Human rights defenders are targeted & killed. The drug trade flourishes. Illegal armed groups grow in power.

1/ When we say the #AmericanRescuePlan is delivering real results to crush this virus and rebuild our economy, here's what we mean. 2/ It raises the child tax credit to $3,000 per child ages 6 to 17 & $3,600 for children under 6. This alone will lift 55,000 Massachusetts children out of poverty. brookings.edu/blog/up-front/….

The rules are clear: weapons have been banned from the House Chamber for over 50 years. But some of my Republican colleagues think they're above the rules. So we're taking steps to fine members who interfere with the Capitol Police metal detectors outside the House Floor. A member of Congress recently tweeted, “Let me tell you why I WILL carry my Glock to Congress.” Another bragged he “was armed” during the insurrection. A third was stopped by Capitol Police bringing a gun into the chamber.

100 days ago the House passed the Heroes Act, an urgently needed bill to secure the strategic testing, tracing and treatment required to reopen safely, to provide strong support for our frontline heroes in state and local government, and to put money in the pockets of Americans. As the Republicans’ deadly 100 days of inaction continues, the coronavirus is spiraling out of control.

THREAD: I want to be as open & accountable as possible to the people of Massachusetts' Second District about what actions my team and I have taken to address the #COVID19 crisis.

Here's a list of some of what we've been up to. (1/?) 2/ Before we had any confirmed cases of #COVID19 in #MA02, I organized an emergency conference call with health care providers to discuss whether or not they had the information, tools, and resources needed to keep our community safe.

For over 50 years, America’s economic blockade against Cuba has been a complete failure. That's why I traveled to Cuba w/ @rosadelauro to build upon President Obama’s constructive dialogue between our countries and extend a hand of friendship to the Cuban people. Not only does our embargo hurt the Cuban people, it hurts America, too. There are lifesaving medicines that have been developed and produced in Cuba that are not available here because of our policies. Our businesses want to trade w/ Cuba, but they can’t because of our sanctions.

1/ Another ridiculous lie from @realDonaldTrump.

From day one, @HouseDemocrats have been focused on delivering on our promises to the American people. Meanwhile, Mitch McConnell calls himself the “grim reaper” and refuses to even consider our bills. 2/ We have the receipts to back it up.
We passed #HR1, the For The People Act — the most ambitious set of ethics & election reforms in a generation. It gets big money out of politics, protects voting rights & strengthens ethics laws.

September is back to school month — but it's also #HungerActionMonth.
That's why this week, I introduced the bipartisan Healthy Breakfasts Help Kids Learn Act alongside @RodneyDavis to help make sure that no child in America goes to class on an empty stomach. @RodneyDavis Nearly 1 in 9 children here in Massachusetts is food insecure. America is the richest country in the history of this world – yet there are 13 million kids here that deal with hunger or food insecurity.

That’s a national disgrace.

I welcome the swearing-in today of Abdalla Hamdok to be prime minister of #Sudan’s transitional government, and I congratulate the Sudanese people on this milestone as they work to establish a civilian-led transitional government.
mcgovern.house.gov/news/documents… I hope the Constitutional Declaration leads to the formation of a government that – after decades of struggle, suffering and sacrifice – guarantees peace throughout Sudan, human rights, justice, full political participation, and a better future for Sudan's families and children.

The Trump Administration's new #PublicCharge rule is cruel, immoral, and mean-spirited. It prevents hardworking, low-income taxpayers who are here legally from using or even applying for programs that they qualify for. This will have a devastating impact on thousands of families in #Massachusetts. Let's be clear here: there is already a public charge rule on the books. The only goal of this dramatic expansion is to tell families they're not welcome unless they are wealthy and white.
