BREAKING: The @DNC resolutions committee democratically passed a #ClimateDebate compromise resolution and it appears that @TomPerez is trying to kill it.

He says it would disrupt the process the candidates have agreed to. All the candidates want a #ClimateDebate.
Debate happening now. @Tinapo makes the point that @dnc members have never voted on the current rules.

Larry Cohen, former @CWAUnion president, calling out the undemocratic nature of this process that @TomPerez has initiated.

The will of the committee is being disrupted.
This is very sad. This is not about one issue versus another. The resolution as amended would allow for all issues to host forums with candidates appearing side-by-side.
Wow. @sunrisemvmt just got a shoutout and thanks.
Representative from Wyoming makes the great point that forums do not reach as many people as something with all candidates on stage simultaneously.
Youngest @DNC member @michaelkapp respectfully reminds @TomPerez that the Democratic Party should be bottom up, not top down. Members did not approve the current debate rules.
.@RepBarbaraLee says we need a #ClimateDebate and it must include people of color and environmental racism.
People speaking against include industry lobbyists (why are they allowed to be @DNC members), people speaking out that we need debates on other issues (agreed!)
Oregon Chair reminds us that all of the democratic candidates want a #ClimateDebate.
Member says we shouldn’t change rules midstream because it would create a battle between candidates…isn’t that what primaries are for? What do the other debates do?
LGBTQ activist @DNC member says that is her main issue but that climate change is the issue in which all other issues rest.
Representative from Missouri reminds us of the intersectionality of climate crisis.
.@YasmineTaeb giving powerful statement as Muslim immigrant on why the resolution as written should be approved. Climate change is important and also this new fuel would allow for other issues to organize forums as well.
Many people wondering why we’re pushing young people away?

Resolution 4 was a compromise from a full #ClimateDebate. It passed. Killing it now would be terrible for energizing young people to believe in @TheDemocrats.
.@TomPerez just gave an incredibly biased explanation of what is actually in the new resolution.

Very unfair that he wouldn’t let a proponent explain what is actually in it.
There it is. Push for @DNC to allow a #ClimateDebate strong-armed to death by @TomPerez.

Activists are chanting, “Failure of leadership.”

An understatement.

Larry Summers belongs nowhere near the White House for 💯 reasons, but especially because of his terrible track record on climate.

@JoeBiden isn't serious about climate or "not going back to the way things were before" with guys like this around. THREAD
bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Summers is a friend of Wall Street behind much of the deregulation that led to the '08 crash, then was brought in to help "fix" it. He made a lot of bad calls.

He's been wrong about most everything. Climate is no exception. Read @MaxMoranHi @EleanorEagan:

In Clinton Admin, Summers argued we shouldn't move too fast to save the planet b/c of "dire and unknowable economic consequences."

Never mind the dire and unknowable consequences of cooking the planet warmer than human civilization has ever experienced!

The past few weeks have brought more & more evidence that we are in a drastic, catastrophic, & urgent #ClimateEmergency.

It’s also more clear than ever that most US politicians, yes even @TheDemocrats, are in complete denial about the scale & speed with which we must act.

A 🧵:
Let’s start with the problem.

Last week, a new report came out in one of the world’s top scientific journals showing that we are at extreme risk of hurdling past dangerous “climate tipping points” in the coming years.

We may have already past them:
nature.com/articles/d4158…
What does this mean?

Basically there are set of things in our planetary system—the thawing of ice caps, deforestation, ocean circulation—that, if they reach a certain point, could set off a series of chain reactions that would spin warming into free fall. wired.com/story/climate-…

First off, this article misses a key “expert” perspective:

THE CLIMATE SCIENTISTS WHO ARE SAYING WE NEED TO RADICALLY TRANSFORM EVERY ASPECT OF OUR ECONOMY IN THE NEXT DECADE IF WE WANT EVEN A 50% CHANCE OF AVERTING CATOSTROPHIC CLIMATE CRISIS

A thread🧵
nytimes.com/2019/11/14/cli…
As someone who spends almost all of his time straddling policy experts, political strategists, & social movements…I’m incredibly disappointed but not surprised by this article.

Every👏 Damn👏 Day👏 I am told by some well meaning person that we need to be reasonable & measured…
Where has “reasonable & measured” gotten us in the last 40 years?

It’s gotten us to the point of societal extinction. Now is the time to demand what we need, not what we think might be feasible.

“Possible” is just a word used to constrain our imaginations and hold back change.

A lot of ppl saying that @sunrisemvmt is dividing @TheDemocrats for sharing the video of @SenFeinstein.

It’s actually @SenFeinstein who is being divisive. Incredibly, unbelievable, outrageously divisive. A thread:
First of all, it’s true: after @sunrisebayarea posted the full interaction w/ @SenFeinstein online, @sunrisemvmt also posted a tweetable shorter version that went viral. It included some of the most morally outrageous statements.
What the edited version didn’t include is much much much more damning, for those of you on this website whose chief concern is keeping @TheDemocrats united.
