BREAKING: Labour NEC passed a motion tonight put forward by Jon Lansman to abolish the post of Deputy Leader - i.e. Tom Watson’s role.
I understand that Tom Watson was unable to attend due to childcare issues. NEC decided to debate the motion in his absence, with Jon Lansman attacking his Remain stance and recent speech in contrast to Labour policy.
Other members of the NEC tried to throw the motion out but you need a 2/3 majority to do that and this wasn’t met - fell short by a whisker of 17 votes to 10. NEC will now consider the motion further at conference tomorrow morning.
All means a massive civil war in the Labour Party before their conference has even begun.

EXCL: No 10 staff - including PM - will be able to see interview notes Sue Gray’s team made about them before they fill out their police questionnaires.
Leaked letter raises concerns they’ll be able to hold back from police any info Sue Gray didn’t get.
When you consider that Met asked Sue Gray not to publish her full report in order to avoid prejudicing their investigation, it is interesting that those accused will get access to her team’s notes before formulating their answers to the police. Tho’ she imposes strict conditions.
If Sue Gray’s notes don’t incriminate you, then are you going to volunteer any extra info to the police at that stage?
Cabinet office guidance makes clear that staff should be honest in their police questionnaires. But ultimately how much they say is up to them.
BREAKING: Cressida Dick has resigned as head of the Met Police following months of intense criticism.
The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan gave her the push today, dissatisfied with her response.
Full statement from Mayor of London tonight.
Cressida Dick was only answering questions on BBC London radio this morning saying she had “no intention of going”. Ultimately the decision wasn’t hers.
In her own statement tonight Cressida Dick says:
“It is with huge sadness that following contact with the Mayor of London today, it is clear that the Mayor no longer has sufficient confidence in my leadership to continue. He has left me no choice but to step aside.”
Jack Doyle gave out awards at the Christmas party in No 10 during lockdown.
He says he’s left of his own choice and according to his own timing, but there was pressure on him to go over the partygate accusations, though the PM is said to have previously refused his resignation.
Jack Doyle is the second member of staff linked to the partygate allegations to have resigned since the scandal emerged. Allegra Stratton was until now the first and only advisor to go.
For background here’s our exclusive from December:
All detail stripped from Sue Gray's report, but it is still clear in its condemnation:
- Behaviour is "difficult to justify"
- "failures of leadership"
- "Some of the events should not have been allowed"
- "The excessive consumption of alcohol is not appropriate"
"There was too little thought given to what was happening across the country in considering the appropriateness of some of these gatherings, the risks they presented to public health and how they might appear to the public. There were failures of leadership and judgment."
