With so many discussions lately about private vs public employees at Alberta hospitals doing the very necessary work of cleaning and sanitization, there has been a lot of speculation about wages. So, stepping fully outside our beer-hall, we decided to weigh in. 1/x
The thing about shifting previously public jobs to the private sector is that there is a risk to the quality of the services. Private companies are profit motivated so they look for savings to increase margins. This means that it is very likely that the same work will be done 2/x
But for less $$/hour. The materials or products used may be of cheaper and lower quality than previous. The employment options go from full time with benefits to part time workers with no benefits leading to furthernunder employment. 3/x

Our thoughts, coherently laid out, on why we are tired of politicians targeting people who use CERB & other aid through the pandemic & how we think things could be improved: a thread. 1/x
So yesterday we got a bit ornery and made a broad tweet about the culture of workplaces disincentivizing workers to return while social programs like CERB and EI are available for pandemic relief. We don't often get ornery, but we are human, it happens. 2/x
The reason we got a bit ornery was because we are forced, yet again, to listen to political rhetoric calling workers lazy and entitled, boldly claiming that CERB support money was spent irresponsibly on cheezies and drugs while people lay about and refuse to work. 3/x

We want you to mask up when indoors. Why? I'm happy to explain it to you.
This is Kel. Kel is one of our founding owners and our only fulltimer. She does everything at the brewery from maintenance to book keeping and is found behind our sales counter 6 days a week. 1/x Image
She is the only person who works between 90-100 hours at the brewery and, because we are still growing, often doesn't pull a salary for her labour. That's ok, she is living her dream! This isn't about payscale anyway. This is about what happens if Kel gets sick. 2/x
If Kel gets a cold and none of our part timers are able to cover, the brewery closes which means no sales that day. It's fine, Kel rarely gets sick.

But what if Kel gets COVID? What if she has to isolate for 14 days? What if she gets really ill and can't work? 3/x

So. I know I'm gonna catch shit for wading in here but, folks we need to have a conversation about how freakishly reactionary some of us seem to be getting.

Can we just pump the breaks on this whole "you support such and such politics if so and so visits your business!!"
1/x
So today a clip got released of our pals up at Troubled Monk having a presser w/ the premier re: opening interprovincial trade for alcohol with other provinces.
This kind of announcement is a huge deal for our industry and as a board member of ASBA, Charlie is in the loop.
2/x
So folks see a local business owner glad hand a politician some ppl happen to hate, and suddenly a lot of vitriol is directed at the business.
Why? A policy maker had a policy announcement & chose to do a presser w/ someone who has been actively working towards similar goals.

We have been watching broken hearted all that has gone on these past few days. We stand in solidarity with the protestors demanding to be heard, standing against authoritarianism, kneeling for peace.
Be kind. Love each other. #BlackLivesMatter
It has taken us a few days to find our words and for that delay we are sorry. In these times of unrest silence isn't strength, it is weakness, patience isn't wisdom, it is fear. We should have spoken sooner, and in future we vow to stand more readily for justice.
I hope our friends in the industry will find their voices soon too. This fight is everyone's fight and while we are not on the front lines of protests, we bear witness. We witness every day discrimination and racism in our community and we will always call it out.
