#Karnatakatrail: Dusk on a Dec evening found me exploring the Bahmani tomb complex at a village called Holkonda, north of Gulbarga. Structures here being swallowed by the vegetation.

#Karnatakatrail: The fort at Gulbarga, being gradually swallowed by vegetation. Rusting cannons, crumbling walls. A difficult task for the resource-strapped ASI.

#Karnatakatrail: Unlike neighbouring #Bijapur where stepwells, pleasure pavilions have survived, Gulbarga is dotted with tombs, which are literally everywhere. Like ghosts of a forgotten past! This huge structure looms up in a residential area called Santraswadi.

#Karnatakatrail: Muhammad Tughlak's shift of the capital to the Deccan may have been short-lived but the architectural traditions of that foray stayed back. As seen here in the congregational mosque at Shah Bazaar, #Gulbarga. Signs of Begumpur?

#Karnatakatrail: Tombs, mosques, other structures frm the Khwaja Bande Nawaz dargah complex, popularly known as KBN dargah to locals. Dargahs abound in the region; most 'sufis' here seem to have been highly political, aligning themselves & even intermarrying with ruling clans.

#Karnatakatrail: In a heritage city dotted with tombs, such as #Gulbarga, it seems normal to have the state archaeological museum also inside twin tombs. These icons give a glimpse of the pre-Bahmani past of the region.
