Let's take a trip back to the WildC.A.T.S. for the team's original #SupermanAnalogue the Spartan series robot called Hadrian! Image
Spartan was part of the original roster introduced when the book was launched. He was the "balanced" one with a broad range of abilities rather than a specialist. Unlike most of the team, he was not an alien or human/alien hybrid, but rather a bodyguard robot... Or so we thought. Image
Now, obviously Majestic showed up shortly after the book's launch and was the more 1 to 1 Superman type, but Spartan certainly could hold his own. He was the team's Vision to Majestic's Thor. Image
Also, while Majestic had a brief appearance in the cartoon, Spartan was the mainstay (and I adored that cartoon). He was strong, durable, and mobile wrapped up in red and blue, making him an obvious Superman style team leader, even if he wasn't quite in the planet moving class. Image
He also was the default character in the SNES video game, being (again) the balanced option when compared to slow and strong Maul and quick and weak Warblade. Image
Then Alan Moore had his run on the book. As usual, he disrupted the status quo and revealed that super terrorist Kaizen Gamorra was actually the body, stripped of memories, of fallen hero John Colt. Where did those memories go? Why they were the basis for Hadrian's programming. Image
(Also it turned out that this Kaizen Gamorra was an imposter. The real one, still a super terrorist, showed up during Warren Ellis's Stormwatch run and then played a big part in the early Authority series) Image
So in the back story of the Wildstorm universe, there was an early team of heroes called "Team One" which terribly botched their first mission. To make matters worse, the field leader, John Colt, gave his life so that the evil alien Daemonites didn't destroy the world too. Image
John Colt was the name taken by the Kherubim Warlord, Yohn Kol. He was not quite the powerhouse that Majestic was, but he was still one of the ightiest heroes of his day. He was something of a Doc Savage type with shades of the Golden Age Superman...so Doc Strange. Image
The Revelation that his mind was based on Colt's lead to a period where he adopted that identity, but it eventually was dismissed. Spartan resumed his use of the Hadrian identity and eventually merged with the Void entity, becoming FAR more powerful. Image
Hadrian also was left a fortune by WildCats patron Jacob Marlowe. As Marlowe's heir, he took the name Jack and began a process of reshaping the world through economics and technological innovation (introducing Kherubim technology to the world). Image
Unfortunately, this is about the time that Wildstorm was folded into the DCU with New 52 and I know fuck all about what happened to Spartan in that shake up. Obviously I have issues with how the Wildstorm properties were merged with DC's. Image
Oh, also, Hadrian kind of became god in Alan Moore's end of time Majestic story. His artificial intelligence became gold bands stretching out through all reality, super conducting thoughts of lights an act of defiance to the heat death of the universe. Image
Can we take a moment and talk about how cool his costume was once they toned down the 90s Jim Lee excesses? That white pants and blue jacket look is like some great soldier design. One of my favorites! I mean, it looked super generic originally, but later artists made it rock! Image
So that's Spartan. He began as kind of generic on a team that wasn't particularly original, but it was a little property that could and he was the frontman! Just as WildCats eventually had a cool niche for itself (only for DC to throw it away), so too did Spartan! Image
