It’s week five in my Law in Rural America seminar for those reading along. This week we’re time traveling through the 20th century to take a look at rural education. 📚#RuralLaw #LegalHistory 1/
We’re starting this week in the early 20C with @TracyLSteffes’s “Solving the ‘Rural School Problem’: New State Aid, Standards, and Supervision of Local Schools, 1900-1933” jstor.org/stable/20462223 2/
Then I’ll take us forward in time by sharing my research on resistance to rural school consolidation legislation in Minnesota between 1967 and 1972 through the lens of an amazing rural school advocate, Margery Burns. 3/ Image
Our last stop will be exploring the “Small Schools” rural school finance cases in Tennessee in the 1990s-2000s with Memphis Mayor Lee Harris’s “Memphis Sings Soul Music, Rural Does Country: School Finance Litigation in Tennessee” digitalcommons.law.umaryland.edu/cgi/viewconten… 4/
The common thread we’ll be discussing is how communities have constructed and resisted narratives about rural education through litigation and legislation, including its comparable value to urban education. 5/
For those just here for the TL;DR, here are three articles: (1) Adam Harris, "The Education Deserts of Rural America," @TheAtlantic theatlantic.com/education/arch… 6/
