An all white body suit is hard to pull off, but what about a species of #SupermanAnalogue examples that rock the look? That's right, since we're definitely in the endgame for this series, it's time we talk about the big race of heavy hitters in the Invincible universe. Image
So this is a race that's hard to talk about without spoiling good chunks of the series and I really don't want to do that because this is a book that I think is really worth reading from start to finish. I'm going to avoid big ones, but there is an early one that I have to note. Image
You ready?
Seriously, past here there will be some spoilers for the first half of the series.
Last chance.
Ok...Omni-Man tells Invincible early on that their race served as intragalactic protectors, but they actually were conquerors. Their vast powers (even the weakest of them were a match for the mightiest heroes of most worlds) made up for their relatively few numbers. Image
When Mark found this out, he fought his dad and lost badly, but Omni-Man couldn't bring himself to kill his son. For his perceived weakness, Omni-Man was declared a traitor to his people. This began his redemption journey and established their people as the principle antagonists. Image
Because there aren't that many of them, we get to know most of the important members of the species over the run. However, there's still a lot of them and covering each separately would be gratuitous. But I will mention 3 important ones. Image
First up, Anissa. She's sort of the Ursa if we're comparing the Viltrumites to the Phantom Zone Criminals from Krypton. While she's one of the less evil members of the race, she does do a pretty awful thing that probably has the longest term ramifications of anyone in the series. Image
Next up, mother fucking Conquest. With the Phantom Zone comparison, this would be the Non equivalent, but the Viltrumites are also comparable to the Saiyans from Dragon Ball Z, and this is their Nappa. He has 2 major fights and both are highlights of the series. He is terrifying. Image
But not as terrifying as the last one: Grand Regent Thragg. For a race of beings that kill Supermen, this is their unquestioned greatest warrior. He might look like Freddy Mercury, but this is their Zod or Vegeta (or really Freeza). Image
The first time Mark tries to fight him, WITH HELP, he is told quite bluntly that this fight is not going to go in his favor. Image
The Viltrumites are a reminder of how brutally terrifying the Superman can be. They need no weapons because their hands can cleave or smash anything. They cannot be hurt. They can travel between stars under their own power. You cannot escape them. Image
It sure is cathartic when a Superman is on your side, but when used as a force of evil, there is nothing scarier. Image
