Written some time before #IWD2020 but nonetheless, nice to see this column appearing. Mentions @holyroodmandy and also the wonderful mural celebrating Aberdeen women by @carriereichardt 1/
In particular, I would like to highlight Marian Farquharson, of whom few will have heard. Marian fought for women to be allowed to join the Linnean Society. After many years of campaigning, the Society finally agreed that women could join 2/
A number of women were shortlisted in 1904 and all but one were accepted into the Society. Marian was blackballed. Loud, campaigning, demanding women apparently not wanted. Marian was an inveterate letter-writer. My PhD thesis is much longer than it should 3/
be because of her letter writing. I note that the Linnean states it holds a "plethora of correspondence" from her in its archives. So loud, campaigning, and forcing her way into the public sphere. An irritating woman. An interesting role model.

I have just submitted evidence to the Scottish govt's Inquiry into the census, which closes 12 August. yourviews.parliament.scot/ceeac/scotland…
My submission was based on a survey of gender-critical Scots who used the survey to protest.
This is what I said 1/
The survey launched 1 June and by 1 August had 654 responses from those who used the census as an opportunity for a co-ordinated protest against @scotgov decision to allow self-ID in questions about Sex and also wider issues relating to the GRA 2/
This was a co-ordinated protest, led by grassroots organisations such as @ForWomenScot, with participants encouraged to complete the census, but in ways that would disrupt its administration 3/
Very excited that this is finally the week in which my book comes out! In it, I place @MumsnetTowers within a wider grassroots women’s movement and as a safe space for gender-critical feminists 1/
Let me tell you about my new book The Politicization of @Mumsnet. It’s out on 15 October and I am very excited! @bindelj has described the book as “informative, amusing and a call to feminist action”. And yes, those are biscuits on the cover! books.emeraldinsight.com/page/detail/Th… 1/
Mumsnet celebrates its 20th birthday this year. What started as a site for parents to share product recommendations has grown into an influential forum that holds an important role in the formation of British middle-class motherhood. 2/
Its influence is seen in the advertising revenue it can raise and its pull with politicians. It’s a go-to source for journalists seeking the female viewpoint on a variety of issues, not necessarily related to mothering. 3/
Just watched the brilliant Her Century produced by @natlibscot curated by @ellomunro and have now recommended to my students. Lots of emotions - could not decide whether I would least like employment at the biscuit factory in 1920s 1/
or to be stuck at home with ‘baby’ (a child that ate an enormous amount) waiting for ‘father’ to come home in the 1950s. Was saddened by the comments of many of the teens in 1980s - I don’t remember having those opinions and 2/
we 1980s girls certainly studied metalwork and graphic design at @BlueCoatCofE - possibly because Coventry was centre of car manufacture at the time? Such a good film for teaching - but will it be accessible after September please?
Thoughts on television debates ahead of the leaders' debate tonight based on research carried out at RGU during the Indy Ref and 2017 General Election 1/
We analysed Twitter discussion during televised debates. This type of ‘backchannel chat’ can help to identify the subjects and debaters that make the most impact on the television audience. 2/
During Indy Ref there was a clear difference in the way the audience responded to the two head-to-head debates and a third 'town hall style' debate between six panellists including four women. 3/
Some thoughts about Mumsnet and gender-critical feminism. One of the reasons Mumsnet is keen to continue supporting this discussion is that it is both popular with many of its core users and attracts new users to the site 1/
In July 2018 Mumsnet shared the information that there had been a 12 fold increase in the no. of people entering the site directly via the Feminist Chat topic. 2/
Analysis of a long thread ‘Tell Mumsnet HQ why you use Mumsnet’ shows that out of 897 responses 574 referenced the Feminism chat threads. 3/
