Hi everyone! I'm Louise Bowler, a Research Data Scientist from @turinginst's Research Engineering Group @turinghut23. I'm borrowing the account for the day to show you all a day in the life of a Research Data Scientist! 👩‍💻
I stumbled across this job whilst I was writing up my PhD and immediately went “Yes, that’s the job I want but didn’t know existed!” I wanted to stay close to research but not be tied to a single field, so the projects here are a great fit
I’ve always enjoyed switching fields – I started out as an undergraduate @ImperialPhysics, then explored the biological and medical sciences during the first year of my PhD @dtc_oxford 🌟🪐👩‍🔬🖥️🧬🧫💊
My PhD was in computational cardiac electrophysiology ❤️🖥️, and I spent some of that time working on @Chaste_Project. It was my first taste of "proper" software development – lots of pair programming, debugging and writing tests!
Those experiences turned out to be really useful for my first project, @turingway. The Turing Way is both a handbook for reproducible data science and a community - we want to make reproducible research “too easy not to do” #TuringWay #reproducibility Image
@turingway is a huge collaborative effort, and is in the process of expanding to five more volumes to share best practice from all aspects of data science! Contributions are always welcome in our GitHub repo: github.com/alan-turing-in… #openscience #TuringWay Image
This morning I'm working on a really exciting project (with a great acronym!) QUiPP - Quantifying Utility and Preserving Privacy in synthetic datasets. Synthetic data is an alternative to releasing sensitive data, but how representative and private is it?
We're taking a demo of the QUiPP project to @SoftwareSaved's Collaborations Workshop later this month. I'm super-excited for the workshop; last year's event was one of the most friendly, useful and fun conferences I've been to! #CollabW20
If we want that demo, we need a way of sharing it with everyone! 👩‍💻🖥️👨‍💻 So my task for this morning: work on getting a Docker image ready so we can get everyone set up easily #docker
I've got an hour or so to get my head down and work on the Dockerfile, so let's get on with it! All the code from the QUiPP project is open; you can take a look here: github.com/alan-turing-in… #openscience
Time for our weekly @turinghut23 tech talk! Today Eric is leading a session on science communication - we're pairing up and working on descriptions of our current research projects for different audiences Image
And now onwards with my busy afternoon! I’m heading upstairs for our “REG for Students" session, where @drsarahlgibson and I have a couple of hours to help out Turing students and researchers with their programming questions. Let’s see what they come up with today!
That was a quiet session for students and questions, so I got on with a couple of other small useful things - a script to automate one of our HR team's reports, and a review of @drsarahlgibson's blog post about the Turing joining the @mybinderteam Federation 🎉
Last part of the day now - a meeting about placements in REG, and some time for reading. We've been working through "Learn Azure in a Month of Lunches" and learning how to automate our Azure deployments so we can regenerate them easily and reproducibly #reproducibility #Azure
Time to wrap up for the day! Thanks to everyone who has followed along, and to @turinghut23 for letting me take over the Twitter account with very little (/no!) experience 😇 I've just got on Twitter myself over at @louise_a_bowler; hopefully see you around!
