This tweet made my evening, day + week. I ❤️@UMichLaw students! Since I didn't post yesterday as usual: here’s what we did in Law in Rural America yesterday for those who have been following along. It was Immigration & Rural Communities Week. #RuralLaw 1/
We read three articles covering primarily Latinx immigration to rural places in the Midwest and South in the 21st century. First up: Sylvia R. Lazos Vargas's 2002 "Latina/o-ization of the Midwest: Cambio de Colores as Agromaquilas Expand into the Heartland. .... 2/
The article was from a LatCrit conference that continues today. You can learn about the @CambioCenter and conference here: cambiodecolores.org/Library/ and read the article here: dsps.lib.uiowa.edu/latino-midwest… 3/
The second article was another from @lisareneepruitt, her 2009 "Latina/os, Locality and Law in the Rural South" available here: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf… 4/
And the last article was a recent student note from Rodger Grantham @GaLRev, "Detainee Transfers and Immigration Judges: ICE Forum-Shopping Tactics in Removal Proceedings." ...5/
This one provoked a lot of conversation about detaining individuals in rural legal deserts away from their families. Read the note here: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf… 6/
Since we're moving online, I'll share how we did that this week, but I'm no expert. I'm trying my best like everyone else. My law school is using BlueJeans to create the online classroom.... 7/
Since this is a seminar, my class and I created a queue system with @BlueJeansNet's chat feature that will work for us.

We also did a one hour activity with @Flipgrid that was, from my teaching perspective, both engaging and enjoyable. 8/
Here are three things that I think were important in going remote last night, FWIW: 1. being intentional about how I structured our class session; 2. being transparent with my students about those intentions; and 3. budgeting plenty of time for us to all learn the apps. 9/
(I'm eager to talk online pedagogy, especially in the law school and seminar settings, so send me good threads and message me if you want to talk!)
The good news is that two of my students have had their JOTWELL review assignments accepted for publication recently! If you want to read about that assignment, take a look here: 10/
And for those who are here for the usual TL;DR current event articles, they are all from Storm Lake, Iowa, which I've wrote about in my own historical research: Art Cullen, In My Iowa Town, We Need Immigrants, New York Times, July 30, 2018, nyti.ms/2NSSxQC. 11/
