1/ A racialized TDSB principal recently told me that a white TDSB principal was complaining *to him* that the @tdsb Director is a "sellout" for talking about all this white privilege stuff and that he/his colleagues are all fed up with it.
2/
WHAT??

Sellout??

To white supremacy??

These "leaders" have *decison making power* over *other people's children*. They're not equipped for leadership, nor are they equipped to be educators. Yet, this behaviour is normalized/accepted in so many school boards & institutions.
3/ This type of overt racism is rampant (far less all the very harmful daily "micro"aggressions)...and it's not just this one "leader". This "leader" has a group of other "leaders" who are all in agreement. It's a systemic problem as they all passed hiring/promotion protocols.
4/
The level of entitlement that needs to exist for a white person to make such a statement to a *racialized peer*, is beyond me. But, the entitlement makes sense given that there are very few consequences to this blatantly racist behaviour.
5/
The trauma that racialized educators & leaders endure is real & harmful. If you say something, you get branded as a snitch/too emotional/unprofessional. If you don't, you swallow the trauma & risk complicity in white supremacy. Lose/lose situation bc there are no consequences.
6/ White "bystanders":
Your silence perpetuates racism. So does "choosing" to disengage, giving your white peers the benefit of the doubt ...again, waiting until you're a _____ to speak up, and aking issue with white ppl who talk about white privilege. Your complicity is violent
7/ There are some white leaders who are actively interrogating and disrupting their privilege...and racialized leaders who are interrogating their internalized whiteness. These leaders recognize that *all students matter and all students can succeed*. But...
8/ since schooling was built on white supremacy and colonialism, there will inevitably be ppl who will be angry and fragile when their white privilege is challenged. It is an expected by-product of an institution moving in the right direction.
9/ This is not a "TDSB problem". There are stories in every district & Ministry reviews of blatantly racist contexts. Challenging these realities is complex/layered. How boards follow up & are held accountable is KEY, including consequences to jobs.
