FIRST UP: #2 SEED FLORIDA PANTHER (PUMA CONCOLOR CORYI) VERSUS AMPHIBIAN CHYTRID FUNGUS (BATRACHOCHYTRIUM DENDROBATIDIS) Photos: @FWS & Rob O’ Sullivan #2020MMM ImageImage
Whether you call it a panther, puma, cougar, or mountain lion - Puma concolor means lion-of-one-color. Panthers are shades of tan, coryi subsp. is darker brown to rust & kittens are gray w/ dark brown/blackish spots & five bands around the tail. fws.gov/refuge/florida… #2020MMM Image
Mountain lions are one of the most widespread felids in the Americas. Rangewide @IUCN ranks them as Least Concern but the coryi subspecies has been listed by @USFWS as an endangered species since 1967. fws.gov/refuge/florida… #2020MMM Image
Florida panther or uekatcv occurs on the traditional lands of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. Mvskoke Language Program is a Resource Center for Mvskoke Language w/ distance learning for citizens via College of the Muscogee Nation mcn-nsn.gov/services/mvsko… Map: Gross 2005 #2020MMM Image
Florida panther diet consists mostly of deer (eco) & hogs (sukhv) & sometimes racoons (wotko). They rarely, but occasionally eat livestock (goats) & domestic cats (pose) digitalcommons.usu.edu/cgi/viewconten… #KeepYourCatsIndoors #2020MMM Image
As obligate meat (vpeswv) eaters, Florida Panthers are not known to eat figs (ke rakko). #2020MMM #FigGate [gif is a mountain lion licking lips with cub crawling on it]
Florida panthers are making a comeback but given the high road density in southern Florida, they are vulnerable to vehicle strikes, especially adult males who travel greater distances than females (Schwab & Zandbergan 2011) #2020MMM sciencedirect.com/science/articl… Image
The amphibian chytrid fungus is not a mushroom (pvto) but rather a tiny cup-shaped fungus. Very few chytrids cause disease, most are saprobic & decompose plant matter. They play important roles in aquatic food webs (Gleason et al 2008) #2020MMM researchgate.net/profile/Telesp… Image
Amphibian chytrid fugus is globally distributed & has been implicated in the decline of hundreds of amphibian species (Olson et al. 2013) bd-maps.net #2020MMM Image
Some amphibian populations co-evolved with the fungus but since the 1940s, the wildlife trade has spread new strains of the fungus to new places & the local amphibians did not have immunity to these new strains (Fisher & Garner 2020) #2020MMM
Amphibian chytrid can infect treefrogs (oske enhuehkv), toads (sopaktv), bullfrogs (vpvtvnv), and salamanders (vcoklopv), and can live in aquatic environments year round (Chestnut et al 2014) #thatsME journals.plos.org/plosone/articl… #2020MMM Image
Amphibian chytrid also has non-amphibian hosts including crayfish (McMahon et al 2013) #ActualLivingScientist @TaeganMcMahon pnas.org/content/110/1/… Image
A chytrid infection doesn't mean an amphibian will die. #ActualLivingScientist Mat Fisher explains the life history, genetic & environmental factors that influence how hosts may respond to a chytrid infection (Fisher & Garner 2020) #VivaLaNuance #2020MMM
Our battle takes place @EvergladesNPS at dawn, where both Florida Panthers & amphibian chytrid fungus occur
Our large 160 pound male combatant is stalking a group of racoons who are busy hunting crayfish on the edge of the swamp forest. The panther is a patient ambush predator but his hunger is getting the best of him... #2020
The panther RUSHES the group & the racoons scatter. An expert hunter, he grabs a racoon who had a crayfish mid-bite #2020MMM [gif of mountain lion running in water]
The raccoon drops the crayfish in the hot sun... it's chytrid infected guts are splayed open & begin to bake while the panther caches his prey to consume later that night (Beire et al 1995) academic.oup.com/jmammal/articl… #2020MMM
FLORIDA PANTHER DESSICATES AMPHIBIAN CHYTRID FUNGUS!!!!!!!!! #2020MMM

NEXT UP: No. 1 seed Pygmy Hog (Porcula salvania) vs No. 16 seed Southern Ningaui (Ningaui yvonneae) #2020MMM ImageImage
Pygmy Hogs have blackish-brown fur shaded w/ rusty red that is longer at the nape of the neck. Weighing in at 3.7kg, males are larger than females. (Mallinson 1971) indiabiodiversity.org/species/show/2… #2020MMM Image
Pygmy Hogs once occurred in tall, wet grasslands throughout the Terai Arc (Oliver 1985) but now only occur in Manas & Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Parks, northwest Assam, India just north of the Brahmaputra River, the 9th largest river in the world #2020MMM researchgate.net/publication/25… ImageImage

NEXT UP: # 4 SEED FISHER VERSUS # 5 SEED TIGER OWL #2019MMM photo credits: Tom Kogut
Tiger owls are generally "free from natural enemies" predators such as coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions & are known to attack humans who get too close to their nests (Baumgartner 1939) #TheyWillCutYou #2019MMM
Males & females tiger owls mature by year 3 & females are larger. They produce 1-6 eggs/season & alternate roosting & hunting during the nesting season. Males do most of the hunting while females spend their time protecting the brood. (Baumgarter 1939) #2019MMM

NEXT UP: # 4 SEED FISHER (Pekania pennanti) VERSUS # 13 SEED TIGER SALAMANDER (Ambystoma tigrinum) (photo: Paul Bannick @ConservationNW) #2019MMM Fisher (Pekania pennanti) photo: Paul BannickTiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum)
Both of our combatants are widespread throughout North America with overlapping ranges. Fishers inhabit forests with large trees, snags & logs for resting & denning, while tiger salamanders occur in forests, grasslands & marshy areas with soil suitable for burrowing #2019MMM
The fisher is not a cat & is not known to fish. #MammalOfTwoLies Fisher comes from the Dutch words fisse/visse & French words fiche/fichet, aka the European polecat. When hunting, small mammals are their primary prey but they will also omnomnom on birds (Powell 1981). #2019MMM

NEXT UP: #8 seed Flat-headed Cat (Prionailurus planiceps) versus #9 seed Water Chevrotain (Hyemoschus aquaticus) aka mouse deer #2019MMM
Flat-headed cat occurs throughout the southern Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, & Borneo in low tropical forests (including oil palm plantations). They also occur in riparian habitats. animaldiversity.org/accounts/Prion… #2019MMM
Flat-headed cats are small, about the size of a domestic cat (1.5-2.75 kg), with a short stubby tail. Flat-headed cats can't retract their claws (neither can fishing cats or cheetahs!) (Sunquist & Sunquist 2002) #2019MMM

Next Up: #4 Coyote (Canis latrans) vs. #12 Sewer Rat (Rattus norvegicus) #2018MMM
Our combatants advanced entirely unscathed from round 1: Coyote gave up on pursuing a possum while Sewer Rat was very fortunate to have encountered a Moscow Dog that prefers human handouts to hunting #2018MMM
Coyotes have been particularly adept at adapting to human landscapes, and are important at controlling deer, geese, and RODENTS in suburban & urban areas urbancoyoteinitiative.com/10-fascinating… #2018MMM
