There is a way to safely reopen by summer, and stay open. It won’t be easy but it can be done. ethics.harvard.edu/covid-roadmap
It’s not a choice between continued economic anguish and accelerating widespread death. The way out is through massively increased Testing, Tracing, and Supported Isolation.
It would take 5 million tests a day by June, 20 million a day by July. It would take a national production board, and/or an interstate compact, to distribute the tests. It would mean enlisting at least 100,000 Americans to help with contact tracing. And it would take leadership.

It’s not too late, but soon it will be. Each passing day, more Americans are laid off—and an approach that forces most aid to go through the unemployment process could accelerate the displacement we are trying to avoid.
Of course, employer-based aid is not enough—cash is needed to support domestic workers, gig workers, the unemployed, and more. But covering wages for employers who keep people on the books is our best shot at keeping jobs intact.
And yes, with that said, it still makes sense to give Americans new ways to decouple all kinds of benefits (from retirement and sick leave to health coverage) from specific employment relationships.

Running for president doesn’t allow much time for reflection, but this morning at First Baptist Church of James Island in South Carolina came the chance to reflect on the humbling awareness of what is at stake for so many in this election.
I know when I am asking Black voters to support me in this election, I am often asking people who have never met me to trust me with their lives. So many Black lives are at stake in the balance of what happens next in our country.
I am humbled knowing that I do not have the perspective of being discriminated against on the basis of my skin color. Not having that lived experience, I will continue to surround myself with people who can help me better understand, and tell me when I don’t.
