Our military is held together by trust. Those who serve trust one another to have their backs. We develop, and rely on, trust with allies and partners. And a level of basic trust binds the chain of command together, all the way to the top. The very structure of the military relies on the expectation and trust that every Commander-in-Chief, party and politics and policy aside, will hold sacred the responsibility for our troops’ lives and will make every decision with troops’ and the country’s best interest at heart.

Today, #SCOTUS has ruled that no LGBTQ American can be fired because of who they are or who they love. It was only 11 years ago this summer that I took an oath and accepted a job that I would have lost, if my chain of command learned that I was gay. Firing us wasn’t just permitted—it was policy.

For many of us, this must be a time for listening and learning as well as action. I'll seek to use my platforms to uplift organizations doing critical work. There is a way to safely reopen by summer, and stay open. Running for president doesn’t allow much time for reflection, but this morning at First Baptist Church of James Island in South Carolina came the chance to reflect on the humbling awareness of what is at stake for so many in this election. I know when I am asking Black voters to support me in this election, I am often asking people who have never met me to trust me with their lives. So many Black lives are at stake in the balance of what happens next in our country.

To those who questioned whether a Midwestern mayor could gather a national movement around a new kind of politics—your are the answer. Later today, we are submitting our January fundraising report to the FEC. We raised $6 million the first month of this year, and an additional $11 million so far this month. This month, we won the Iowa Caucuses, and we came in second in New Hampshire—with just about 4,000 fewer votes from the sitting senator of the neighboring state. We’ve had some of our highest fundraising days, but frankly our numbers should have been better.

I want to congratulate my competitors and their supporters on their campaigns here in New Hampshire.

I joined this race a year ago seeing how the last presidential election led to desolation and division. But after spending months on the trail bringing our message to millions, I saw firsthand the resilience of American families and the hope they carry for the future. Tonight, folks here in the Hawkeye State start caucusing for the person they think should be the Democratic nominee.

Right now, we’re the best-positioned campaign to win against Donald Trump, but the challenge we face is making it that far.

Every time Democrats have won the White House in the last half century, we’ve had a candidate who is focused on the future—one who hadn't been in Washington very long, if at all, and was opening the door to a new generation of leadership. We've got to galvanize, not polarize, the historic American majority that we have right now, in order to win and in order to govern and actually get big things done.

No region of our country is immune to the threats we face. A gig worker in California is struggling with the same tectonic shifts in our economy as a driver in South Bend or a nurse in South Carolina. We are all at risk of a changing climate, an evolving economy, an unchecked gun lobby, politicians who put party before country, a president who divides us while putting himself above the law.

This is the most consequential election of our lifetimes.
