Actually, no. No, that's not the tweet.

We've know this was coming. We've were warned. Over and over again. The pandemic preparedness infrastructure in this country was dismantled. Funding for @CDCgov cut. Funding for @WHO cut. Funding for local health departments cut.

THREAD
I wrote about it here in 2018, recognizing that the lessons learned from fighting Ebola in West Africa had been so quickly forgotten. The warning signs have been there for some time. This is the worst case scenario that many of us feared.

A pandemic playbook was created in 2016 to prepare for and respond to exactly the scenario we are seeing right now. People like @JeremyKonyndyk helped put this together, knowing this was on the horizon. But it was shelved and forgotten.

We are the wealthiest country in the world. And we now have the greatest number of #COVID19 cases anywhere.

And that's solely because we weren't prepared.

Our outbreak is only beginning. Case numbers are rising throughout the country, in every state, every day.
Here in NYC, the global financial hub, we have doctors and nurses going to work in garbage bags to protect themselves.

Garbage. Bags.

In the wealthiest country in the world.

We are hearing mixed messages.

Should we continue social distancing?

Are we running out of ventilators?

Do our nurses and doctors immediately need more personal protective equipment?

We need our messages from physicians and public health professionals. Not politicians.
Because the reality on our frontlines is dire.

NYC had the greatest # of ambulance dispatches in history. Ever. More than 9/11.

All day, I heard sirens on the street.
My colleague just shared a story of a healthy 49 year old who was diagnosed with #COVID19 and died in a chair in the ER.

Our ERs and ICUs are filling up, despite what you hear at task force updates.

We are not near the end of this. We are hardly at the beginning.
We ignored the warning signs.

We undermined and underfunded our ability to proactively prepare for this.

We are only now starting to pay the price.

We must all do our part.

Please stay home. Please be safe.
And know that my colleagues wo will show up to work on the frontlines, every single day, for every one of us. For as long as it takes.

Even if the only thing protecting them is a plastic bag.
