Just a few months ago, some leading presidential candidates made preserving the current healthcare system a key part of their campaign. Their motto? “You can keep your plan if you like it.” As millions now lose their jobs & insurance with it, it's clear: They were wrong. (1/11)
Let’s be honest: This myth that private health insurance gives you stability or freedom was always a false talking point written by the insurance industry. I should know: I helped draft it when I worked for a big insurer. And now, tragically, everyone can see the truth. (2/11)
But many pols fought to keep this for-profit healthcare system. @PeteButtigieg said rather than the government ensuring coverage for all, let’s trust voters to figure it out themselves. @joebiden & @amyklobuchar said Americans like their private insurance & should keep it. (3/11)
Well, now millions are losing their plans due to layoffs & others getting huge bills for #COVID19 treatment while on private insurance. If we could have these pols on stage again now, do you think they’d repeat what they'd been claiming in past debates, TV ads & speeches? (4/11)
Our sad new reality: 3.3 million filed for unemployment last week alone & @washingtonpost reports it's the start of “a massive spike in unemployment that could result in over 40 million Americans losing jobs by mid-April.” You read that right: 40 million in under 3 weeks. (5/11)
Remember the debate around @Culinary226‘s "good" health plans in Nevada? Hotels & resorts in Las Vegas are doing furloughs & layoffs, which means union members may lose those plans. Private insurance is not secure, no matter how good a plan seems. Note the caption below👇 (6/11)
.@PeteButtigieg, @amyklobuchar & @joebiden: What do you say now to the millions who relied on employers for healthcare, but just got laid off & lost their coverage? How secure are those benefits & how much do Americans love their private plans now that they're vanishing? (7/11)
Americans already knew this. That’s why a big majority in every state that held a Dem primary wants to replace employer-based insurance with single-payer. The *general public* supports it too: a new Business Insider poll shows they back single payer 48-29 (24 no opinion). (8/11)
The one who actually loves the status quo is the health insurance industry. From working there, I know insurers love employer-sponsored insurance because it’s the biggest contributor to their profits. They charge employers big fees to manage their workers’ health benefits. (9/11)
So how do insurers keep this racket going at the expense of everyone else? Spend huge sums to lobby politicians, advertise to confuse Americans & contributions to influence candidates. But now, reality & truth have intervened & we’re facing a major reckoning as a country. (10/11)
Not only do Americans worry about getting #COVID19, they also have to worry about losing their insurance because we’ve allowed corporations & employers to stay in charge of our care. I had the wrong view on this & changed my mind. I hope these politicians will do the same. /END.
