If you come from a deep red state, as I do, and struggle with how to talk to your family about science, you too may find this piece a lifeline.

My grandma died yesterday; she was 104, healthy, independent & spry until two days ago, when she had a small stroke. They were able to take her home and sit her at the window to say her farewells.

I can't even muster sadness, that death is a fucking triumph.
My parents have never had insurance. Dad revoked their social security numbers and marriage license when I was eight or so, and they will never get Medicare or Social Security bc of their beliefs. (militia/Patriot/homeschool/separatist/fundamentalist, highly ..iconoclastic)
I just got off the phone with my mom earlier, and I was honestly astonished to hear that they were taking the virus and social distancing seriously.

A strong constitution definitely runs in my family on both sides. I think that's why they have sustained these views for so long.
(I'm pretty sure if I were to press I would find that *mom* is taking the virus seriously, and my brothers and dad all think it's a conspiracy of some sort. Heh. I didn't press.)

Also today in Idaho news: fist sized hailstones and a 6.9 earthquake. 🤨
