The trap of a piece like this one is that it kind of ends up identifying Modi with India now. Also the second trap is one I have written about before somewhere - we ASSUME India was secular before and now its not.

I would argue yes the state did adhere to secularism to the best of its ability as and when it was politically expedient too and yes some of our older leaders were very dedicated to secularism as were the courts.
However, Indian society as secular has always been a matter of debate. Or else I wouldn't be recording lynchings in 2005 or caste riots and honor killings in the 1960s.

What I’m learning about the Modi Govt is that it cannot

1. Make a policy where someone doesn’t die because of it.
2. Make a policy which doesn’t involve imprisoning a few million or billion.
3. It loves detention camps under different pretenses (NRC, quarantine, integration)
4. Their favorite mean thing to do is cut off the Internet.
5. They are incapable of making a policy which doesn’t involve bullying and enforced compliance.
6. They keep telling people to deal with hardships for the good of the nation (almost a weird kind of grooming)

7. They have convinced people that empty gestures make most sound and that’s how things should be.

Hey there, let me behensplain this to you. Migrant labour often share rooms and if even one or two go away the third or fourth cannot afford to pay monthly rent especially if they’re not getting daily wage employment. Second, their lack of wages means they cannot buy provisions.
So they’re not irrational and irresponsible. They’re trying to make a decision based on the information set that is available to them. They can’t access the govt and they don’t know if they will be taken care of in a city. If they step out they may be beaten by cops.
They also fear getting sick with this disease. They know they can’t access hospitals as readily as the rich. By moving out they’re trying to preserve themselves. You may not like it from your elite vantage point, but that’s their decision.
