SOLUTION FOR THE PANDEMIC MANAGEMENT IN NIGERIA

The trajectory of this pandemic in different nations offer lessons for Nigeria in a way that allows us to own our solution in a bespoke way. South Korea has the pandemic under control without imposing any national lockdown. Image
They did this through mass testing, aggressive contact tracing and isolation of suspected victims. And it worked wonderfully for them. Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong achieved elements of control over this virus by mass testing and insistence on citizens wearing face masks.
So in Nigeria; the govt need to examine these success stories and become creative in fashioning a distinctively local solution. If the spread goes nationwide; a National Lockdown will be impossible to police & will be catastrophic for the millions of very poor fellow citizens...
... and will devastate irreparably our fragile economy.

Mass wearing of mask when outside your home works because a lot of infected people are asymptomatic. So it is easier for such people to spread the virus without even Knowing.
There are no easy decisions on this matter; but a fixation with total lockdown must be avoided. It is a blunt instrument and that medicine will definitely kill more patients (through hunger) than the original virus itself. Total lockdown is not sustainable & will kill citizens.
Moreso; Nigeria does not have the financial resources to mitigate a total nationwide lockdown for the many poor and vulnerable citizens.

So what can the government do? My few suggestions (not an exhaustive list) are follows:
1. Simply pulling together the limited Human Resources within govt will not cut it. Like other nations; the govt should create a team that include leading minds from the private sector to form a Pandemic Management Panel. Having separate panels for different elements is not...
... efficient and does not promote joined up working. So the panels headed by the SFG and the VP should be merged. There can then be sub committees. A unified structure is better at dealing with such pandemic than fragmented entities.
This way cause and effect can be considered under one roof. And collateral impacts and consequences can be better captured.

2. The FG should declare a Nationwide Curfew from 8pm to 5am. This will allow resources to be focused on daytime monitoring and tracing activities.
This will avoid a total lockdown thus allowing d economy to breath a little in d meantime. Offices should function on reduced opening hours to allow staff get back home in good time. This will also allow those who rely on daily income to make some money thus reducing mass hunger.
3. The govt should source face masks and distribute freely and widely nationwide. If it is free, most Nigerians will comply and use it.

4. Mass testing facilities should be opened nationwide. Each LG office or health centres can become a testing centre. This will cover the...
... nation in 1 swoop. There should be protocols developed for this.

5. A robust contact tracing should be implemented. This should not just be about force but effective information campaign that encourage voluntary coming forward of citizens who have been in announced hotspots
6. With partial closure as suggested; the government spending on palliatives will be less than in total lockdown. This savings can be used for more effective tracing, supply of face masks, and provisioning of isolation centres.
7. A daily debrief by this unified panel should be established. This will allow credible information sharing and reduce rumours and conspiracy theories to the nearest minimum.

This is a global emergency. And there will untimely be a global solution we can piggyback on.
8. The govt should leverage the goodwill amongst Nigerians by creating opportunities for the army of citizens volunteering daily to help with this pandemic. There are ways these volunteers can be used to save govt spending and saturate the nation with credible information.
So our focus should be minimising spread and managing impact on citizens and the economy. But the government have to change its approach and widen the human resource pool away from just politicians and appointees to experts within the private sector who are better placed to...
... act with agility and speed needed to protect our people and the Nigerian fragile economy. The government has started well, but it’s now time for a ramped up response to combat this pandemic. God will help us, but we also must help ourselves.

One of the ways to improve your Capacity to Think Critically is to deliberately argue in favour of a position that is opposite to what you believe. Arguing against your preferred position enables u to see the issue from the opposite side. This has TWO vital positive consequences.
1. It allows you to see there is some merit in the argument of the other side, even though u do not agree with it. It helps to broaden your perspective as well. And helps you appreciate that u do not have a monopoly of passion or position on an issue.
2. Seeing the issue from the opposing side helps to better marshal your own argument. You are better able to see the weaknesses of your position. It helps to strengthen your rebuttals and can even help moderate to tweak your own previously extreme position on an issue.

UNDERSTANDING HUMAN DUALITY

The psychological concept of DUALITY explains that we all have good and bad sides to us. We are capable of contradictions and multiple manifestations. A good man can do bad things and a bad man can do good things.
Gaddafi was a dictator but led a more peaceful & prosperous Libya than we have today. Hitler had enough good in him to convince over 80% of Germans to vote for him in a democratic election. Saddam was an oppressive leader but he hated Islamic Extremism…
…so much that no Terrorism was present in Iraq until he was overthrown by the Americans. Duality is the antithesis to the narrative of a single story that someone is All Good or All Bad. We are capable of both. It is naive to think of someone only from one perspectives.

A sign of a lawful Parody is for folks to know easily that it’s a Parody. Misleading or Deceptive conduct or Passing Off & Misinformation is not Parody. If u are a parody, u don’t use exact logo or image of Original without a twist that cleverly shows it’s parody. Let’s be guided
Copying the original fully and sticking the word parody inconspicuously at the end is not a fair parody. Well planned parody play on words to make it glaring what is being copied but also that it is a parody. Misinformation & damaging mischief does not qualify as parody.
E.g, Parody of NEMA could call itself N3MA or NEMA-PARODY. But to use the official name, logo & full official descriptions, (but with “parody “ stuck to d end of it) can be misleading; especially when d messaging is made to sound official & not exaggerated or comical as expected

ON TWITTER BAN OF TRUMP
I disagree with Twitter’s ban on Trump. While I am not in support of many of his politics & diatribes but a ban is unwise & dangerous.
Voltaire once said; “I might disagree with your opinion, but I am willing to give my life for your right to express it”
The caveats and warnings put under some of his tweets by Twitter was sufficient to highlight the non-mainstream nature of many of his views. But banning Trump is dangerous is a democracy. Crazy, unconventional and marginal views are part of democracy.
The first scientists to declare the world was not Flat (as believed by most at the time) were ridiculed by the mainstream. But later; they were found to be right. What if that view was banned. Incitement can be criminally prosecuted in most countries; so that is easy to deal with

SOME PROVISIONS FROM THE NEW POLICE ACT THAT NIGERIANS SHOULD BE AWARE OF.

The Nigeria Police Force (Establishment) Act 2020 was signed into law by President Buhari in September 2020 as a replacement for the antiquated 1943 Legislation we have been using since Independence. Image
While the Act contain many provisions that relates to the operations of the Police; there are a few interesting clauses in the Act that should be of special interest to Nigerians. This Thread simply highlights very few of the many provisions.
1.THE IGP MUST MAKE PROVISION FOR THE MENTAL & PSYCHOLOGICAL WELLBEING OF OFFICERS. Mental health is a big problem in Nigeria as a whole; but Section 9(e) of the Act makes it mandatory for the IGP to make sure the mental & psychological needs of police officers are catered for.

#ENDSARS IS A SYMPTOM NOT THE PROBLEM
Rooting out abuse and brutality in the police tactical squads

The various allegations of brutality and extortion against the SARS squad of the police is symptomatic of a wider problem with the entire NPF personnel as a whole. Image
Scrapping SARS will not stop the menace as it is merely a fruit of a poisonous tree. All other fruits will be equally poisonous. A more fundamental reform of the police paradigm is needed.
What many Nigerians do not know is the extent of the corruption economy within the police.
The entire force is a cesspit of intertwined corruption-provoking practices and operational culture. Allow me to give some examples.

In the past, it was common to see DPOs frequently levied by some CPs to find Money to host visits of IGPs. Not sure if this still goes on.
