The residents of every state want someone from that state on a presidential ticket. It's good for the state and feels particularly exhilarating for those who work in politics in that state. So it's left to those from the other 49 states to think about what's best for the country.
PS/ There are many politicians I can see being excellent presidential or vice presidential candidates down the line. That includes Whitmer, Stacey Abrams, Beto O'Rourke, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and others. That doesn't mean I feel obligated to pretend that *now* is the moment.
PS2/ (Though—were she old enough—I'd be tempted to say now *is* the moment for AOC. She created a space, poetics, name recognition, agenda, and political identity for herself that's cognizable to voters—and did it *before* being named a VP candidate, which is the ideal scenario.)
