As that piece notes, Don was a huge sports fan.

The first time I met him was when John and I went to Buffalo to catch a Bills game with his family in Nov 1996.

It was my first NFL game and this southerner’s first trip to Buffalo and, wow, was I unprepared for how cold it got.
I basically had jeans and a light coat on, like an idiot, and after three quarters getting blasted with cold air from the lake my body just completely shut down.

I fell asleep right there in the stands.
