Nothing like a lawsuit to get the phones ringing! We are so appreciative of all of you who've been in touch since we filed a lawsuit on behalf of 7 clients over #COVID19 response in #Oregon prisons. Here's a thread of what you can do to help.
First, if you're thinking "Lawsuit, what lawsuit?" here's an article to get you up to speed. portlandmercury.com/blogtown/2020/…
If you know someone in an #Oregon prison who wants to share what's happening, mail them our legal intake questionnaire to fill out and return to us as "legal mail." Next best option is for you to complete our online survey on their behalf. Find both here: ojrc.info/covid19
There are about 14000 Oregonians in prison right now. Most have loved ones outside too. Check in with friends and family who have someone inside - they may be having a hard time coping with fears for their family member/friend.
Use our template letters to send messages to Gov Brown, Colette Peters (DOC director) and your county sheriff, asking them to take action to keep everyone in their care and custody safe from #COVID19. ojrc.info/covid19
If you're hiring, or will be when this is over, remember people with criminal histories typically face greater barriers to employment than those without. Steady work is good to prevent reoffending, build self esteem. Can you give someone a chance to prove themselves?
Finally, don't forget about 1000s of Oregonians in prison when this is over. Ask yourself why, if we need to keep so many locked up, governors & sheriffs across the country are able to let people out when there's a public health crisis as if mass incarceration wasn't one already?
