this one's for new york, which, and I can't believe I'm saying this, is inextricably tied to this cocktail because of a fictional gossip columnist. it has a reputation for being girly, but in the apocalypse we need to be confident no matter who we are. so here's the cosmopolitan
this was one of the first drinks I was taught in bartending school because of how generally popular it is. and there's no reason it shouldn't be! continuing my theme of "everything is derivative," imagine a tart margarita but with vodka instead tequila, and adding cranberry juice
you'll be serving it in a martini glass, which should be familiar by now. put a few cubes of ice in one and pour in some water to let it chill

while it cools down, and speaking of cranberry juice, let me tell you about the first time I met my future father in law
when I was younger, and to some extent still now, I made a point of never ordering the same drink twice. life is short, who doesn't love variety, etc., etc.

I didn't really have a favorite cocktail at that point, although the manhattan was well on its way
my girlfriend--now wife--and I met her dad at a bar in chicago, and wanting to switch things up right off the bat I ordered a seabreeze. pretty sure he had never seen a man do that. anyway, it's fine, this was like 20 years ago, we're all family now
so the glass is nice and chilled now, right?

in a shaker, add 2 oz of vodka, 1 oz cointreau (or triple sec), a half-ounce of lime juice and a half-ounce of cranberry juice. drop in a couple of ice cubes and shake it up real good
strain it into a martini glass and garnish with a lemon twist. look wistfully out your apartment window and maybe do some internal monologue stuff. but mostly enjoy.

that's today's apocalypse bartending. bottoms up, and I'll see you on the other side
