when you want strong crisis-related restrictions that you might not notice until you try to push against them, there's one place in the world that can deliver that kind of thing better than anywhere else: singapore.

and so today we will make a singapore sling
warning: this one is going to require some stuff you might not have in your bar. there's a lot in it, all originally designed to--somewhat creepily--disguise the taste of the alcohol so, uh, ladies can drink it.
here's the full list:
-1.5 oz gin
-.5 oz cherry brandy
-.25 oz benedictine
-.25 oz cointreau
-4 oz pineapple juice
-.5 oz lime juice
-.25 oz grenadine
-a dash of bitters
that's a lot!

the good news is that you just put all of those ingredients in a shaker with some ice, shake it for 30 seconds or so, and strain it into a hurricane glass (or, more likely, a highball/collins glass) filled with ice and garnish it with a pineapple wedge
the bad news is that you might not have a lot of the ingredients. I've always got cherry brandy in the house, in the form of kirschwasser, because of my wife's heritage. but benedictine is definitely not in my bar (it's a french liqueur)
btw, a couple of people have asked, so here's what I think a good basic home bar should have for starters: bitters, bourbon, whiskey, rum (light, for versatility), vodka, gin, sweet and dry vermouth, triple sec/cointreau, tequila and, somewhat optional, campari.
given the long list of ingredients, I will let you in on a dirty secret. three-quarters of the bars you go to, if you order a singapore sling, it will be something much simpler. and of course still built to disguise the alcohol
the recipe they taught me in bartending school is quicker and dirtier: 1.5 oz gin, a splash of grenadine, an ounce of sour mix, a splash of cherry brandy (optional). you shake it all up and strain it into a highball glass with ice, then top with soda water and stir
you can try that one if you want, or do it the original way, but the drink really *does* conceal the alcohol, which also makes it great for concealing the anxiety of april 2020.

that's today's apocalypse bartending. bottoms up, and I'll see you on the other side
