NEW ARTICLE ALERT with examples of #consumption options with high potential to reduce #carbon footprints. Here are some of the top options and their mitigation ranges and a link to the article (tinyurl.com/tyk67kb). It is openly available @IOPscience ERL /trd Image

There is an obvious need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to limit climate change. Relying strongly on consumption reduction is not only the least risky option to stay within planetary boundaries, but also absolutely necessary where incomes are high! /2
We screened close to 7000 records to synthesize a menu of carbon reduction options from the domains of food, transport and housing. /3
Top10: living car and flight free, opting for renewable electricity, plant-based diet, refurbishing and renovating, using improved cooking equipment and renewable and efficient heating. Their mitigation potential in high-income context is up to 9 tCO2eq/cap on average./4 Image
Transport offers the highest potential with living car-free, shifting to an electric car and avoiding a flight, all with a median potential of 2tCO2eq/cap. Both car and air travel increase sharply with rising income, so these strategies are key in high-income context. /5 Image
Just a single return flight has almost as much average reduction potential as not driving for a whole year at all! Yet, in Europe there are already countries with more than 4 flights per passenger on average. /6
While we find a huge reduction potential from the switch to electric car, the range is also one of the largest in our assessment. Because context matters! The source of electricity explains about 70% of the variability, so there will be no reductions with coal-powered electricity
When it comes to food, the highest potential lies in the change of diet to vegan with a median of close to a ton of CO2/cap annual reduction potential. Improved cooking equipment, and overall shift to organic, local, season, no-food waste is also beneficial! /8 Image
The key is to consider inter-connections. For example, while organic production may sometimes require more land, if a shift to organic is coupled with a reduction of food waste, a shift to organic does not have to lead to deforestation and associated emissions. /9
Housing was quite difficult to review with lots of different methodologies and metrics. We find that the shift to renewables for electricity and heating as well as refurbishing and renovating have some of the highest potential. /10 Image
There is also a need for explicit consideration of the scale of consumption, as just making some industrial processes slightly more energy efficient will not bring about sufficient emission reductions. /11
The average carbon footprint in some continents are more than 4 times the per capita climate target for 2030, and even more in some countries. Carbon footprints are extremely unequally distributed, with wealthier people/countries being associated with much higher carbon. /12
There are a lot of infrastructural, institutional and social factors that create inertia and make it difficult for people to change. There should be a change of our systems, this global issue is not only the responsibility of consumers. We discuss some ways to overcoming lock-ins
Where do we go from here? In the midst of a global pandemic, these options are quite telling of the activities that we should be supporting in the long run (and in the short run provided they go well with social distancing).
Car-free cities, plant-based diets, renewable sources, local holiday plans, these are all up on the list. Bailing fossil fuel industries is completely unjustified in the context of climate change and will only bring higher emissions in the future. /15
Decisions made today should tick at least these two boxes: a liveable planet and a good life! /16
This is a systematic review where we screened over 6900 records against an inclusion criteria and synthesized findings from 53 studies at full text. Thanks! /end Image
