It’s amazing how many people on here are comfortable saying that black people are fat and so it’s their fault that Covid-19 is disproportionately killing them. It’s so on brand that no one was blaming Covid-19 victims for getting sick & dying until they found out they were black.
Yes, black people have co-morbidities that make coronavirus so lethal. It’s called structural racism and the lack of empathy for black victims is 400 years old.
Mind you, we have ZERO data on obesity rates of Covid-19 victims and black people disproportionately suffer hypertension, asthma and diabetes even when they are not overweight/obese. Further, black Americans are about 7% more obese than the average American, & most are not obese.
If this becomes the narrative, we should be very worried, as we catalogued in the #1619Project, there is a history of how we handle dangerous diseases when we think the harms can be contained to black people. nytimes.com/interactive/20…
