A question from Trudy: "Do you think that the concept of resilience has changed as a result of this pandemic?" #QuirkWebinar
Phil: "Never waste a good crisis." I come back to transactional leadership.

By keeping CALM:

Compassion for people
Action-Orientation (if you have time to decide,do)
Level-Headedness (awareness of self - diet, care, sleep)
Mindfulness (consequences of decisions) #QuirkWebinar
Chris: 1/3 -2/3 Rule for Leaders.

If the leader takes 1 day say to do analysis and create an initial plan, then the team takes 2 days to query it.

Phil: We are all dealing with a fast situation. Our administrative team had never worked at home. It presented a new leadership challenge for us. We make sure that our leaders are supported.

2 Up, 2 Down Concept: creating an ecosystem of care throughout your org #QuirkWebinar
Transparency in Decisionmaking - shifting the culture of how we do things. How are we going to adapt?

Phil: Firefighting at the start, keeping decisionmaking quite tight. But there's only so long you can do that. Next stage, things devolve out. #QuirkWebinar
Brother UK is using "Freedom in A Framework" during the contingency planning stage to involve the team and help us solve these immediate, unforeseen issues.

Question on delegation of authority during a crisis.

Chris: A crisis will put a different lens on what you do and on your people. People will react differently. I'm investing more time in engaging & communicating w/team to understand where they are psychologically #QuirkWebinar
Phil learned a valuable lesson from 2008. Keep your eye on the future. Ask members of your team to think about the horizon. Give them that permission, to give thought to that. It will help you in a couple weeks when you have more capacity for that issue. #QuirkWebinar
Phil: Black-Hat-Thinkers could be very valuable to you at this time.

From De Bono's Six Thinking Hats

Utilising 'The Strategy Wheel'.

You may need to take into account suppliers and supply chains 6/12 months down the line. Could you involve suppliers in those conversations now? #QuirkWebinar
Phil: I've learned to use Situational Awareness in all areas of my life. That's a learned skill, after many years of hard graft. If you think you are 'last year's leader' that is, if you think your biases are blinding your thinking, my advice is to listen to people #QuirkWebinar
Phil addresses current and future behaviours that could affect business:

3 Questions to ask yourself:
What's been temporarily postponed/suspended?
What's been disturbed/accelerated?
What are the more permanent patterns that will immerge?
How can you capitalise?
#QuirkWebinar
Phil: The scale of this pandemic will be another inflexion point. It is going to be business as UNUSUAL. Create some capacity and time to really change your thinking. To figure out how you can capitalise on that.

While people are furloughed, it's an opportunity to take advantage of knowledge online. Adaptive leadership, upskilling ppl on digital tools. We've shifted to Microsoft Teams quickly. The way we communicate as a business has changed. We need to be ready for that. #QuirkWebinar
These tools and new knowledge will also give a sense of purpose. It will give that dopamine hit that we all need. That sense of moving forward that many people need.

Comment from a viewer:

Has anyone else noticed how much better meetings have gotten? We can't go back to business as usual.

#QuirkWebinar
When Chris returned from Afghanistan to the UK, the change of environment was jarring. Every organisation is going to feel like a scale-up because we're having to learn as we go along. We're transforming. There's also the psychological pressure on people returning #QuirkWebinar
Phil: We're going to see an attitudinal shift in work cultures when we return to workplaces. There's been an opportunity for people to recalibrate their lives. As leaders, we are going to have to be sensitive to this and the expectation we will be putting on people #QuirkWebinar
Question: What buzzwords will characterize life beyond this?

Phil: Words I've always used are Compassionate and Authentic Leadership. Corporate thinking has come under the microscope. I hope Compassionate Leadership emerges from all of this. #QuirkWebinar
That's the end of today's webinar. Sincere thanks to @PhilJones40 for taking part and for all your contributions. We'll back soon with another webinar. Take good care. #QuirkWebinar
