#Caring4NHSPeople
Work is ongoing to extend the offer to social care colleagues, explains @SonyaWallbank

The graphic below describes the frame for the wellbeing offer for #OurNHSPeople during the #Covid-19 response

#Caring4NHSPeople
The frame has been created using the benefit of experience & expertise of those involved in response to events such as 9/11, Manchester bombing, etc to ensure #OurNHSPeople receive the right response at the right time says @SonyaWallbank

#Caring4NHSPeople
A range of resources are available to help #OurNHSPeople with their wellbeing during #Covid-19

#Caring4NHSPeople

#Caring4NHSPeople
We're now hearing from @ProfNGreenberg Professor of Defence Mental Health at @KingsCollegeLon

Neil recommends line managers have 'psychologically savvy' conversations with their teams - genuinely listening, having social bonds makes a huge difference.

#Caring4NHSPeople
Nip issues in the bud, recommends @ProfNGreenberg - if you see someone struggling, don't wait for them to reach out. Get in touch with them, offer support.

#OurNHSPeople
#Caring4NHSPeople
Being distressed during such a time is totally normal says @ProfNGreenberg . You need to keep an eye out for 'abnormal distress' - when people are persistently not coping

#OurNHSPeople
#Caring4NHSPeople
Principles from the military for managing during a crisis:
💡Proximity - if someone is struggling find alternative role within the team
💡Immediacy - respond quickly
💡Expectancy - the crisis will end
💡Simplicity - reassurance in simple things
@ProfNGreenberg
#Caring4NHSPeople
Thank you @ProfNGreenberg for sharing your experience and advice with us

#Caring4NHSPeople
It's now time for a panel conversation - we're hearing from @WestM61 on the value of compassionate leadership. Connection is hugely important, feeling we belong and cared for especially in a time of fear & uncertainty

#Caring4NHSPeople
Advice from @WestM61 for compassionate leadership:

💙Be present, genuinely listen
💙 Listen to concerns
💙 Show empathy
💙 Demonstrate an intention to help one another

#Caring4NHSPeople
#OurNHSPeople
It's really important to sit, listen, reflect, and connect with others says @SonyaWallbank . For #OurNHSPeople who are working at home, the lines between work & home can blur & end up working longer hours than usual. Rest is important

#Caring4NHSPeople
Team leaders need to offer to help, but make sure not to over-deliver recommends @ProfNGreenberg , need to protect wellbeing of the team.

Team leaders also need to ask team to be honest with them re behaviours, esp negative ones!

#Caring4NHSPeople
Teams need to take time to talk together. Crucial for productivity and connectiveness, says @WestM61

#Caring4NHSPeople
Vital for people to feel a sense of autonomy and control during a crisis - high stress & low control is a cocktail for stress says @WestM61 . It's vital for staff to be able to feed back

#Caring4NHSPeople
Knowing that people are doing their very best and things won't always be perfect offers team psychological safety, says @ProfNGreenberg

@WestM61 adds that this approach builds trust

#Caring4NHSPeople
Coherent, good quality studies are crucial says @ProfNGreenberg - don't flood already overwhelmed staff with studies. Focus on stress, sleep, rotas, moral injury

#Caring4NHSPeople
It's crucial we think about the 'recover' stage after #Covid-19 says @ProfNGreenberg . We won't return to the old normal, we need to be prepared for the 'new normal' and need to give consideration to that

#Caring4NHSPeople
Let's not pathologise distress to the crisis says @SonyaWallbank - the right interventions at the right time mean further psychological support may not be necessary

#Caring4NHSPeople
Be self-compassionate recommends @westm61 - and to one another. The simple things such as making a cup of tea can have a profound positive impact #Caring4NHSPeople
A huge thank you to our panel @SonyaWallbank @ProfNGreenberg @mwest61 for sharing your expertise and experience
