Good story here. I did wonder what COVID might reveal about both essential and non essential patient - NHS contact.

I suspected there might be less of both and this tends to show that up.

We need to keep an eye on ONS excess death data for quite a long while.
Whereas a year ago there was 90% occupancy of acute hospital beds in NHS England it is currently at 60%.

Scotland too talks about “eerily quiet” non Covid wards.

The Scottish death registry shows 1741 deaths from all cause to the week ending 5/4/2020
That is 643 higher than the same week averaged of the last 5 years

COVID was mentioned in just 242 of the death certificates in the 2020 cohort.

Are GPS just not recording COVID on their certifications or are people dying from unattended other causes - or both?

We don’t know.
In March A& E was down by c 30%. 26.3% down in general A&E. 35% in specialist A and E, eg eye or dental.
Most worryingly even cardiac patients are avoiding A and E

Similarly for strokes

The Kings Fund think tank says the fall as “breathtaking.”
In Greater Manchester beds were only 57% full with emergency calls for heart attack and strokes right down.

Or can they simply not get through?

Is it fear of getting CV19 if taken off to hospital?
