Tony was always there to help me build my Sonex. This day was the first time I took him up in it. We started out in the Sonex.
He’s now building an RV and I love stopping by to help.

So then we hopped in the Champ. Now, I love flying my Sonex....but there is something about puttering along at 1500’ AGL in a Champ that cant be beat. We headed southwest from Clow towards Newark, IL.

It was so smooth. The air was crystal clear and the Champ just motored along without much input.

We shot a few landings at Cushing. Grass strips are meant for tailwheel aircraft. Just such grass roots flying....
A couple of full stop taxi backs. A couple touch and go’s. Just one of those evenings you don’t want to end.
The power comes off a bit....the slipstream sighs......

All too soon, it was time to head back to Clow. The sun was easing down towards the horizon.
As we turned eastbound, the sky began to take on golden hues and that magic soft light began to fill the fields below.

Behind us, the sunset began to glow. The yellow Champ was lit from behind and the color below faded....
It’s a short flight but the magic lingered.

Clow slid under the left wing as we savored the moment....
Left crosswind, turn downwind, then base....the golden glow just shining on the western horizon.....
The power came back again, and Tony turned close final. I was smiling, tucking away the moment inside for the winter that would follow.....he squeaked it on Runway 18....
The sunset faded....the cool air was still and quiet....
