Joe exotic (#TigerKing) hated the fact Big Cat Rescue ranked no.1 on Google "stealing his damn customers". Well, maybe it's the 157K backlinks to the domain!

I used @ahrefs + @BuzzSumo to look at the backlink profile and here's some interesting stats (a thread) #CaroleBaskin
The site (bigcatrescue.org) has 157K backlinks pointing to the site, coming from 6,352 domains!

Before the series launched on Netflix - the site had 4,391 domains linking to the site meaning they've seen a 45% increase in domain links in the last month!
1719 of those link to the site using exact domain anchor text of "big cat rescue" - juicy as hell 🔥

EVEN MORE juicy - 79% of them are followed

"That b**ch Carole Baskin!"
BUT we know its not all about the quantity! Are they even of any quality?

Well, Carole Baskin has landed links from BBC, Forbes, Washington Post, Vice, National Geographic and MSN to name a few.
Majority of the links point to the homepage but Carole knew she needed some links to some deeper level pages. So what does she do?

Well, she knew that globally MILLIONs of people were searching her name. Everyone wanted to know who that b**ch Carole Baskin was. Image
So she created a landing page - titled Carole Baskin on 11th April!

This page mentions her name "Carole Baskin" 30 times, has 7 internal links, NUMEROUS videos, including links to her books and DVDs she's trying to sell (of course)
In the space of 5 days shes got this page to rank 5th for her name! Oh and 6th too! Shes moving on up!

Shes landed 211 links (84 domains) to this page already (incl refinery29 + Bustle). But shes redirected some juicy links into this page (like the National Geographic one)
However using @BuzzSumo , I found that Big Cat Rescues's most linked to content piece is their refute against Netflix and Joe exotics fame which went live on 12th April! bigcatrescue.org/refuting-netfl…

In 4 days shes landed 1,036 links to this page from LA times, NBC news and Time mag
The page has also had over 50.6K social shares in 4 days according to @BuzzSumo - making it too the most engaged with page on her site.
And finally ... her biggest competitor is this site wildcatsanctuary.org - but they cant even compete with these links. With just 947 domains pointing to the site (half of them blogspot blogs) they haven't got a chance.
Hopefully you enjoyed reading these stats and took away some learnings. One thing I know - is that b**ch Carole Baskin is a link building, content marketing genius.

Im a journalist and editor on most media databases, which means - those who are not checking who they’re sending their releases to … I get 10-15 other agencies press releases every week!

Before you scramble to your sent box to check, 🙊heres what most agencies are doing wrong:
👉🏼 you’re looking like an SEO agency.

Journalists are clued up to what your goal is now (link vs brand etc) and they’re hesitant to give links unless you give them value or reason to do so.

Stop asking for links 5 times in a release and looking like an SEO agency, and start

Don’t lose creativity at the expense of links. Google ranks the best result for a search term. Instead of manipulating google to think you are the best result, just get your customers to tell google instead

Recently I had to be honest with a client that got in touch.

They were looking for an agency and had several proposals for SEO, content and PR all being told they needed links and invest most budget there.

They didn't need links at scale, they needed a small handful to specific
areas but what they needed is fucking good content, and to sort their site speed. These are two areas pulling the site down. They were facing a fast decline in traffic every single month and cant rely on paid anymore to deliver the ROI they were looking for.
Google was penalising them for poor content and lack of internal linking structure. There content held very little authority and therefore got little traffic.

Some of there best content was 5 years old, no updates but thats all Google had to play with.
