🚨 NEWS 🚨

We just released a report w/LCCLA on the impact of COVID-19 for the Latinx community.

The outlook is not good. We're dying disproportionately. We have the lowest rates of healthcare. We're on the frontlines of exposure.

But we can fight back.
Latinx people are suffering from social & economic inequalities exacerbated by this crisis.

We represent the overwhelming majority of low-wage job earners. We have the most workplace fatalities.

Yet we have the lowest healthcare coverage—abandoned by the government.
This means we're considered "essential" right now, as farmworkers, grocery store workers, caretakers, & medical workers.

We’re in high-risk jobs w/ the *lowest* defenses:
—1/5 of us are paid poverty wages
—70% have no retirement acct
—just 49% have private healthcare
The jobs we're in as nurses, taxi drivers, & grocery clerks are at high risk of infection.

The other jobs we're in as restaurant workers, hospitality staff, & more are facing huge layoffs.

Our lives, our jobs, our homes, our schooling, our retirement are all on the line.
We're also twice as likely to be jailed b/c of disproportionate encounters w/the cops. Latinx men are four times as likely to go to prison as white men.

The US also has 33,000 people in immigration detention—an outbreak waiting to happen.

Those detained are at huge risk.
The odds are against us. The system is unequal & unfair.

Still, we can win. We're the fastest growing group in the country. We're 16% of the economy & will be 13% of the electorate by 2020. We're the youngest, w/a median age of 28.

We have to organize. mijente.net/covidreport
