Extrairdinary. The UK government are suggesting their response to the coronavirus crisis has been perfect. Clearly they've decided that any suggestion of humility, or indeed that perfection in the face of an unprecedented crisis is an impossibility, will be taken as weakness.
This response to an allegation about one period of time references a later period of time, as if mentioning how well the NHS is doing means any criticism must be invalid.
And this response fails utterly to address the accusation. If you want to claim perfection you better have the back-up for it. As many keep saying, Cheltenham festival...
You can go through this and the earlier rebuttal to the ventilator story to see that Number 10 is doubling down on UK exceptionalism and their favoured passive-agressive messaging approach. So why have there been so many more deaths than Germany if we were so perfect?
I've always thought it fair to excuse some mistakes in response to an unprecedented global crisis. But if Government want to claim perfection then they have to expect all the problems to be pointed out.
People are dying. But we know the centre of government isn't working flat out on coronavirus because they've found time this weekend to put out two lengthy statements which take time. Brexit is taking time. This appalling statement should not have been issued.
PS am thinking that a few good interviewers could absolutely destroy this statement. You said you took the right steps at the right time. What about x, y, z....
