So, global temperature anomalies are more variable during the Oct-March period (average monthly stdev = 0.33C) than the April-September period (average monthly stdev = 0.29C). Is there a good paper out there digging into the causes? 1/3
I assume its because winter temperatures are broadly more variable than summer temps over land, and the Northern Hemisphere has much more land area. 2/3
Based on this observation I assume that high winter monthly temperature anomalies are less likely to be representative of the annual anomaly as they are less likely to persist into the summer (at least at quite as high a level). 3/3
