While the pandemic has ravaged the world, the plant continues to warm. 2020 saw the second warmest start to a year on record despite neutral El Nino conditions. It is on track to be one of the warmest if not -the- warmest year. See more @CarbonBrief: carbonbrief.org/state-of-the-c… 1/4
The first three months of 2020 was only a bit behind 2016 – the warmest year on record. However, 2016 benefited from a super-El Nino event that boosted winter temperatures. While we expect summer anomalies to drop a bit, 2020 has a real chance of beating 2016. 2/4
We've also updated our climate model/observation comparison. Temperatures are currently well above the average CMIP5 model projections, and the last 12 months were close to the warmest 12 months on record: 3/4
Arctic sea ice concentrations have been on the low end of the historical range for the first few months of 2020 (after reaching the second lowest extent on record last summer), while Antarctic sea ice is near normal at the moment: 4/4
