Fascinating. ICYMI, @briankrebs took a look at who's registering the domains behind the "reopen" protests.

Lots are astro-turfed. The question is, who's paying for this, and why?

Reminder, @timkmak revealed that the NRA has significant ties to Russia. npr.org/2018/03/01/590…

Which leads me back to the first question: Who's paying for these movements, and why?
@briankrebs @timkmak As @briankrebs notes, some of these "reopen" movements tie back to the Dorr brothers, who have opaque financing, and are making money off of scaring Republicans and creating chaos.

Carl von Ossietsky won a Nobel Prize for his journalism. He reported on the re-armament of the Nazis in preparation for WWII and rising anti-semitism.

He was detained in a concentration camp.

He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1935, and died in police custody.
The other journalist to win a Nobel Prize, Svetlana Alexievich, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2015. A Belarusian, she wrote extensively about post-Soviet Russia.

As we debate what the Chinese government has done wrong in Coronavirus response, please be specific how you define your actor.

Chinese government vs. Chinese.

We make these distinctions in other areas where there's underlying discrimination.
Being specific about the actor helps assign accountability to the people who made the decisions.

It avoids casting blame on people who have nothing to do with the decision.
More importantly, for those of us who have criticism of the Chinese government and Xi, separation between the government's response and talking about China writ large helps allow the people of China to be on our side in criticizing their government.
