If someone figures out what is up with the @Worldometers data for New York, please let me know. It's the global epicenter of the pandemic and @Worldometers reports 33% more deaths—20,167 versus 15,302—than the State of New York or anyone else. @Worldometers has to fix this *now*.
PS/ The result of this error—either by @Worldometers or everyone else—is the former is reporting 46,235 deaths in the U.S., while others are reporting about 40,500. So nearly all the difference is coming from @Worldometers data for New York. This really matters for IHME purposes.
PS2/ If there are 40,500 U.S. deaths, there's still a very distant chance the IHME model could be accurate. If there are 5,700 more deaths than that, the IHME model is well off-course. @Worldometers either needs to shut down or correct the *most important number* it's publishing.
UPDATE/ What a total sh*tshow we're in: the @nytimes just ran a big story saying New York *just* hit 15,000 deaths—but folks are writing in saying that's wrong, and that @washingtonpost says it's wrong. Which means the NEW YORK TIMES doesn't know how many have died in *New York*.
UPDATE2/ So the story seems to be this: either New York state or New York City or both are artificially keeping 5,000 presumptive deaths from their tallies to show where the state and city "are now." The NEW YORK TIMES is following suit—publishing bad data but not explaining why.
UPDATE3/ The problem is that while this may help New York officials to speak with more clarity about what it happening in NYC day-to-day, it throws off *all the national numbers* by 12.5% at a time when we're trying to have a *national conversation* about "re-opening." I'm livid.
UPDATE4/ So we have stories in THE NEW YORK TIMES, MSN, THE HILL, and elsewhere saying New York City "just passed 15,000 deaths," and @COVID19Tracking is following suit, but playing that game artificially decreases the *national* data in a way that undermines urgent policymaking.
UPDATE5/ I've been using @Worldometers and will continue to. But the fact we can't even get our act together to agree on a *national death-toll* underscores why we have individual regions making their own decisions, media outlets contradicting one another, and just general chaos.
