Generally good news for Biden. His strength among older Americans (and relative weakness among POC compared to Obama or even Clinton) shows both the power and limits of a "return to normality" message.
Can "return to normality" win an election? Yes, absolutely. Can it govern and build a lasting coalition? I have my doubts simply because I don't think its goal of normality is realistic.

1. Anderson Cooper raised an interesting point here: are people calling for a quick re-opening of the economy (before testing-and-tracing infrastructure is in place) willing to work in dangerous places?
2. It's common to talk about the pandemic as a war. But it's a war where the frontline soldiers -- the essential workers -- have been drafted into a fight they didn't know they were getting. And the push to quickly re-open the economy is further conscription.
3. So: a modest proposal: if this is a war, then all sectors of society need to be drafted: dangerous work should be shared by all. Trump should work a day a week as a hospital orderly, Brian Kemp should work in an Amazon warehouse. thenation.com/article/societ…

1. American federalism has shown a partial upside in the pandemic -- states like California and Washington were able to get ahead of the federal response. But we're now seeing the down side with Georgia pushing for a premature end to the lockdown.
2. There are no internal borders (or only minimal ones) in the United States and it's a nation with a very high degree of geographical mobility - which indeed is necessary with the supply chain. So a federalist approach is only as strong as the weakest state.
3. And with testing-tracing infrastructure, you'll need a national push. Unfortunately, Trump runs a Potemkin presidency where actual policy is secondary. Federalism has reached the limits of its effectiveness under a joke administration. Here: thenation.com/article/politi…
