The first time I was in a meeting in a Benchmark conference room Bob Kagle was still an active partner. Bill Gurley was in that same meeting as a new partner. I had known Gurley since he was introduced to me by Mauboussin in ~1995. I received Gurley's Above the Crowd by fax then.
Who was in my first meeting at Benchmark?

Andy Rachleff
Bill Gurley
Bob Kagle
Bruce Dunlevie
Dave Beirne
Kevin Harvey
Steve Spurlock

We went out to dinner in Palo Alto after the meeting. I recall it was the same day a book was published about the firm.
"With our model, eventually people stop doing new investments. Some call it ‘retirement’ but I am on 11 boards, and will be serving them out through the company’s life. So kick-starting a 10-year process!” Gurley wrote in a WhatsApp message Wednesday. google.com/amp/s/www.bloo…
4/ One of the things I said in my recent podcast lindzanity.libsyn.com/panic-with-fri… was that the best way to learn is to surround yourself with smart people and learn by observing them. Bill Gurley is one of these smart people. To make this happen you must "play it forward," but also back.
5/ I have twice written a blog post on what Bill Gurley has taught me. I could easily write ten posts on this topic. This was the first post geekwire.com/2013/dozen-lea… (which is also in one of my books) amazon.com/Lessons-Entrep… this one, which is a sequel: 25iq.com/2016/10/14/a-h…
