It's alive! The #Carrboro Transportation Advisory Board worked hard last year to finalize downtown "slow zone" recommendations and prioritize projects, which was followed by (and in some cases built upon) work by @CarrboroPZI staff. I'll try to summarize ongoing work. 1/X
Last week, the Town Council approved the E Main Street lane reconfiguration, and staff will formally request that NCDOT include the modifications with the upcoming resurfacing project. 2/X
The town received NCDOT approval for several pedestrian safety projects, including high-visibility crosswalks at:
• N Greensboro St at Oak St
• N Greensboro St at Robert Hunt Dr
• N Greensboro St at Hillsborough Rd
• Jones Ferry Rd at Bim St
• W Main St at Poplar Ave
3/X
Design work is underway for:
• high-visibility crosswalks, bike lane markings, bike boxes, curb extensions, pedestrian signals at W Main St at Weaver St
• bicycle improvements, marked crosswalk, pedestrian signal at W Main St at Jones Ferry Rd
4/X
Design work is also underway for:
• high-visibility crosswalk at N Greensboro St at Pine St
• high-visibility crosswalk at Hillsborough Rd at High or Cheek St
• some kind of bicycle improvement on Old Pittsboro Rd
5/X
Design work will begin soonish for:
• high-visibility crosswalk at W Main St at Ashe St
• raised intersection or green paint at Roberson St at Libba Cotten Bikeway
• pedestrian refuge at Old 86 at Hillsborough Rd
• protected bike lane on Jones Ferry Road
6/X
Outside downtown, design work will begin soonish for:
• lighting, rapid-flashing beacon, median island at Homestead Rd at Claremont Rd
• pedestrian refuge at Hillsborough Rd at McDougle schools driveway
• multiuse path between Cobblestone Dr and Colfax Dr
7/X
📝 A few notes:
• Staff are exploring leading pedestrian intervals and no right on red rules at key intersections.
• Staff have learned the state traffic engineer will not approve speed limits lower than 25 mph on state-maintained roads because of enforcement challenges. 🤷🏻‍♂️
8/X
⚠️ And a really important note: Timelines for some projects will almost certainly shift as a result of the ongoing #COVID19 crisis and NCDOT budgetary constraints. 9/X
🔍 The Town Council receives regular updates from @CarrboroPZI staff on all #Carrboro transportation projects. The latest report is available at carrboro.legistar.com/LegislationDet…. 10/10
